1 WHICH WARNING INDICATOR IS CONCERN ASSOCIATED WITH?
  • Is the symptom associated with the MIL or TCIL warning lamps? 
Yes Go to next step.
No Service as required. See INSTRUMENT CLUSTER .
2 PRELIMINARY CHECKS
  • Perform the following preliminary checks:
    • Electrical connections
    • System components relating to warning indicator
  • Are all checks OK? 
Yes Go to next step.
No Service as required. After repair, if no other symptoms are present, rerun quick test. See ON - BOARD DIAGNOSTIC TESTS .
3 CHECK SYSTEM INDICATOR LAMPS
  • Is the symptom "TCIL never on" or "MIL never on" (this includes MIL never on during bulb check when the engine is first started)? 
Yes For TCIL Never On:
See TRANSMISSION CONTROL SWITCH (TCS) OR TRANSMISSION CONTROL INDICATOR LAMP (TCIL) CIRCUIT MALFUNCTION .
For MIL Never On:
See GENERAL PINPOINT TEST 3: MALFUNCTION INDICATOR LAMP (MIL) .
No Go to next step.
4 CHECK ENGINE OPERATION
  • Does engine start? 
Yes Go to next step.
No See SYMPTOM TROUBLESHOOTING CHART - ENGINE DRIVEABILITY  .
5 CHECK ENGINE IDLE IN PARK OR NEUTRAL
  • Does engine idle rough in Park or Neutral? 
Yes See ENGINE POOR DRIVEABILITY  .
No Go to next step.
6 PERFORM PCM QUICK TEST
  • Perform PCM quick test. See PCM QUICK TEST .
  • Are any DTCs displayed during continuous memory self-tests, key on, engine off (KOEO) or key on, engine running (KOER)? 
Yes Check for cause. See DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE (DTC) INDEX - POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE (PCM) .
No Go to step 8.
7 CHECK SYMPTOM INDICATOR WITH THE ENGINE RUNNING
  • Is the MIL or TCIL always on with the engine running? 
Yes For MIL always on:
See GENERAL PINPOINT TEST 3: MALFUNCTION INDICATOR LAMP (MIL) .
For TCIL always on:
See TRANSMISSION CONTROL SWITCH (TCS) OR TRANSMISSION CONTROL INDICATOR LAMP (TCIL) CIRCUIT MALFUNCTION .
No Go to next step.
8 VERIFY TEST RESULTS
  • Are test results OK? 
Yes Troubleshooting is complete.
No Service any additional symptoms. See SYMPTOM TROUBLESHOOTING CHART - ENGINE DRIVEABILITY  .
