The Parallel & Perpendicular Parking Assistance (PPPA) system is intended to assist the driver during parallel and perpendicular parking maneuvers through means of identifying a proper parking slot and controlling the steering wheel during the parallel and perpendicular parking maneuver. The system is defined as "semi-automatic" since the driver maintains the control of the longitudinal movement of the vehicle (i.e., the driver shall provide accelerator and braking inputs). Depending on the driver's parking maneuver selection, the PPPA system is capable of maneuvering a vehicle into a parallel or a perpendicular parking slot on either side (i.e., driver side or passenger side).

The mission of the system is therefore to assist the driver and not to substitute the driver. The driver must stay in full control of the vehicle's longitudinal acceleration and is responsible for the vehicle's movements.

Parallel Parking Maneuver: Vehicle is positioned in-line with another parked car or cars.

Perpendicular Parking Maneuver: Vehicle is positioned into a parking slot in the rearward direction.

The information regarding the presence and distance of an obstacle is transmitted to the driver in the form of an audible alert and graphic display. The audible alert shall be pulsed at a rate dependent on distance to the obstacle.

OPERATION

PPPA Functional

The PPPA systems seek feature is operational under the following conditions:

  1. The vehicle is equipped with an Automatic Transmission.
  2. Vehicle is in everse gear or a rive.
  3. The system is activated by the customer.
  4. Vehicle speed is below 11 km/h (7 mph).
  5. The ignition is in the RUN  position.

The PPPA is automatically deactivated when:

  • The driver performs an uncorrected action or wants to abort the parking maneuver by applying a torque to the steering wheel.
  • The vehicle speed is out of the acceptable operational range of the PPPA system.
  • An ABS event becomes active.
  • Driver door is opened.
  • Tailgate is opened.
  • 4LO is active or activated.
  • A trailer is connector to the vehicle.
  • The path tracking finds no alternative reference maneuvers are possible.

PPPA Seek

During PPPA operation the seek feature is active. Seek automatically searches the side area of the vehicle corresponding to the turn signal in use.

PPPA Slot Determination- The standard parking slot if the free area between two parked vehicles or standard poles. Standard poles are including but not limited to passenger vehicles, commercial vehicles, motorbikes, trees, actual poles and containers. The PPPA system considers parking area with or without a curb. In a situation without a curb, a virtual connecting line between the outer borders of the parked vehicles is used as the lateral reference. If the two parked vehicles are not aligned, the reference line is on the ground of the parallel to the second vehicle (the vehicle ahead).

During the see phase the maximum distance to parked objects is 1.5 meters and the minimum distance is 0.5 meter. The maximum vehicle speed allowable during seek phase is 30 km/h. When the system enters into a maneuver mode, the supported maximum vehicle speed is then 7 km/h and the minimum distance to parked vehicles is now 0.15 meters.

When to See a Mechanic

Stop DIY work and contact a certified mechanic immediately if any of the following apply:

  • You smell fuel, burning insulation, or see smoke.
  • Brakes feel soft, pull hard to one side, or make grinding noises.
  • The engine overheats, stalls repeatedly, or misfires under load.
  • You are missing required tools, torque specs, or safe lifting equipment.
  • You are not confident in the next step or safety outcome.
