  1. Verify the customer concern by operating the transmission external controls.
  2. Visually inspect for obvious signs of mechanical and electrical damage, refer to the following chart:

    Visual Inspection Chart 

    Mechanical  Electrical 
    Selector lever BCM Fuse 19 (7.5A)
    Selector lever mechanism PCM/ TCM
    Brake Shift Interlock Actuator (BSIA) Wiring harness
    Tow/Haul switch Loose or damaged connections
    Select Shift switch Corroded or damaged terminals
  3. Retrieve all diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) and refer to the DTC Chart.
  4. If the fault is not visually evident and no diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) are present, determine the symptom. Refer to Symptom Chart-- External Controls  or to Symptom Chart -- NVH  .
