- Ignition on.
Depress the brake pedal and move the gear shift selector to different positions. Check that the gear position is updated in the display in the combined instrument panel and on the panel on the gear selector assembly.
Is the gear position updated?
Yes - Intermittent fault
No - Checking the wiring and component

- Ignition off.
Check the communication cable between the gear selector control module terminal #2 and the transmission control module (TCM) terminal #B31 (#B21). Check for a short-circuit to ground. See Checking wiring and terminals. Permanent fault Checking Wiring and Terminals. Permanent Fault.
Replace the circuit board in the top panel if no fault is found in the cable.
Remedy as necessary.

Intermittent fault
Check the communication cable between gear selector control module terminal #2 and transmission control module (TCM) terminal #B31 (#B21). Check for an intermittent short-circuit to ground. Remedy as necessary.
