Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) Information

2004 Volvo V70 L5-2.5L Turbo VIN 59 B5254T2SECTION Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) Information

Diagnostic trouble code (DTC) information

Condition

Diagnostic trouble code (DTC) ECM-9160 is stored if the engine control module (ECM) registers a fault in the signal from the throttle position sensor (TP) for the throttle unit, potentiometer 2 (circuit 2) when the ignition is switched on

Substitute value
The throttle angle is calculated using potentiometer 1 (circuit 1) in the throttle position (TP) sensor for the throttle unit. Diagnostic trouble code (DTC) ECM-9150 is also stored if the fault is also detected in potentiometer 1 (circuit 1). If both ECM-9160 and ECM-9150 are stored, the supply to the damper motor in the throttle unit will be shut off. The throttle will set itself to the return position.

Possible source

Signal too high:
- Contact resistance or oxidation in the terminals between the engine control module (ECM) and the throttle unit
- Short-circuit to supply voltage in the signal cable
- Open-circuit in the signal ground cable for potentiometers 1 and 2
- Defective throttle unit.

Signal too low:
- Contact resistance or oxidation in the terminals between the engine control module (ECM) and the throttle unit
- Open-circuit or short-circuit to ground in the signal cable
- Open-circuit or short-circuit to ground in the power supply to potentiometers 1 and 2
- Defective throttle unit.

Faulty signal:
- Contact resistance or oxidation in the terminals between the engine control module (ECM) and the throttle unit
- The signal cables are short-circuited to each other
- Defective throttle unit.

Fault symptom[s]
- Poor performance.

When to See a Mechanic

Stop DIY work and contact a certified mechanic immediately if any of the following apply:

  • β€’ You smell fuel, burning insulation, or see smoke.
  • β€’ Brakes feel soft, pull hard to one side, or make grinding noises.
  • β€’ The engine overheats, stalls repeatedly, or misfires under load.
  • β€’ You are missing required tools, torque specs, or safe lifting equipment.
  • β€’ You are not confident in the next step or safety outcome.
