2020 Toyota RAV4 XLE, AWDSECTION Procedure
  1. INSTALL TRANSFER AND TRANSAXLE SETTING STUD BOLT 

    HINT: 

    It is not necessary to remove the transfer and transaxle setting stud bolts unless they are being replaced.

      NOTE:

      There are 2 types of transfer assembly installation conditions, a type using only nuts and a type using nuts and bolts.

      Install stud bolts according to the transfer assembly installation condition of the vehicle.

      Refer to PROCEDURE - Step 2

      1. Clean the transfer and transaxle setting stud bolt holes.
      2. for Transfer and Transaxle Setting Stud Bolt A:
        1. Apply adhesive 1324 to 2 or 3 threads on one half of 3 new transfer and transaxle setting stud bolts A as shown in the illustration.

          Adhesive

          Toyota Genuine Adhesive 1324, Three Bond 1324 or equivalent

          NOTE:
          • Do not apply adhesive 1324 to the ends of the transfer and transaxle setting stud bolts A.
          • Install the transfer and transaxle setting stud bolts A immediately after applying adhesive 1324 to prevent the adherence of foreign matter.
          • Install the transfer and transaxle setting stud bolts A so that the side that has adhesive 1324 is facing the automatic transaxle assembly.
        2. Install the 3 transfer and transaxle setting stud bolts A to the automatic transaxle assembly positions shown in the illustration.

          Torque

          39.2 N.m (400 kgf/cm, 29 ft.lbf)

      3. for Transfer and Transaxle Setting Stud Bolt B:
        1. Install a new transfer and transaxle setting stud bolt B to the automatic transaxle assembly positions shown in the illustration.

          Torque

          39.2 N.m (400 kgf/cm, 29 ft.lbf)

          NOTE:

          Install the transfer and transaxle setting stud bolt B so that the side that has sealant is facing the automatic transaxle assembly.

  2. INSTALL TRANSFER ASSEMBLY 
  3. INSTALL TORQUE CONVERTER ASSEMBLY 
    1. Set the key at the top of the front oil pump drive gear and put a matchmark on the transaxle housing.

    2. Apply MP grease to place a matchmark on the torque converter assembly so that the position of its groove is clearly indicated.

    3. Align the matchmark on the housing with the one on the torque converter assembly and engage the splines of the input shaft with the turbine runner splines.

      *1 Front Oil Pump Oil Seal

      NOTE:
      • Install the torque converter assembly to the input shaft while keeping it horizontal.
      • Do not damage the front oil pump oil seal.
    4. Rotate the torque converter assembly approximately 180° and engage the splines of the stator shaft with the stator assembly.

      NOTE:
      • Do not push the torque converter assembly excessively when rotating it.
      • Install the torque converter assembly to the input shaft while keeping it horizontal.
      • Do not damage the front oil pump oil seal.
    5. Rotate the torque converter assembly approximately 180° again, align the matchmark on the torque converter assembly with the one on the housing and insert the groove of the torque converter assembly into the key of the oil pump drive gear.

      NOTE:
      • Do not push the torque converter assembly excessively when rotating it.
      • Install the torque converter assembly to the input shaft while keeping it horizontal.
      • Do not damage the front oil pump oil seal.
    6. Clean the drive plate and torque converter assembly setting bolt holes.
    7. Using a vernier caliper and straightedge, measure the dimension (A) shown in the illustration and check the dimension (A).

      Standard

      14 mm (0.5512 in.) or more

      NOTE:
      • Make sure to deduct the thickness of the straightedge.
      • If the automatic transaxle assembly is installed to the engine assembly with the torque converter assembly not sufficiently inserted, the torque converter assembly may be damaged.
      • Do not include the thickness of the set block.
  4. INSTALL WIRE HARNESS CLAMP BRACKET 
    1. Install the 4 wire harness clamp brackets to the automatic transaxle case sub-assembly and transmission case side cover with the 4 bolts.

      Torque: 10 N.m (102 kgf/cm, 7 ft.lbf)

    2. Install the wire harness clamp bracket to the automatic transaxle case sub-assembly with the bolt.

      Torque: 19 N.m (194 kgf/cm, 14 ft.lbf)

    3. Install the wire harness clamp bracket to the automatic transaxle case sub-assembly with the bolt.

      Torque: 20 N.m (204 kgf/cm, 15 ft.lbf)

  5. INSTALL TRANSMISSION CASE PLUG ASSEMBLY 
    1. Coat a new O-ring with Toyota Genuine ATF WS and install it to the transmission case plug assembly.
    2. Install the transmission case plug assembly to the transaxle housing.
  6. INSTALL NO. 1 TRANSMISSION CONTROL CABLE BRACKET 
    1. Install the No. 1 transmission control cable bracket to the automatic transaxle case sub-assembly with the 2 bolts.

      Torque: 12 N.m (122 kgf/cm, 9 ft.lbf) 

  7. INSTALL TRANSMISSION OIL COOLER

  8. INSTALL NO. 1 OIL COOLER TUBE SUB-ASSEMBLY WITHOUT HOSE 

    See step  4 [11/2018 - 10/2019], or see step  4 [10/2019 - ]

  9. CONNECT INLET NO. 1 OIL COOLER HOSE 

    See step  5 [11/2018 - 10/2019], or see step  5 [10/2019 - ]

  10. CONNECT OUTLET NO. 1 OIL COOLER HOSE 

    See step  6 [11/2018 - 10/2019], or see step  6 [10/2019 - ]

  11. INSTALL AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLE ASSEMBLY 
    1. Apply clutch spline grease to the surface of the crankshaft that contacts the torque converter assembly centerpiece.

      Approximately 1 g (0.0353 oz)

    2. Confirm that the 2 knock pins are installed on the engine assembly and are not damaged.

    3. While keeping the engine assembly and automatic transaxle assembly horizontal, align the knock pins with the holes in the automatic transaxle assembly and install the automatic transaxle assembly with the 8 bolts shown in the illustration.

      Torque: 64 N.m (653 kgf/cm, 47 ft.lbf)

      NOTE:
      • Make sure that the wire harness or similar items are not pinched between the contact surfaces.
      • Do not use excess force when installing the automatic transaxle assembly.
      • When mounting the automatic transaxle assembly to the engine assembly, make sure to securely fit the knock pins into the knock holes.
      • Check that the torque converter assembly rotates.
      • When tightening the bolts, be sure that the mating surfaces of the engine assembly and the automatic transaxle assembly are in close contact with one another.
  12. INSTALL REAR ENGINE MOUNTING BRACKET SUB-ASSEMBLY 
    1. Install the No. 2 rear engine mounting bracket to the rear engine mounting bracket with the 2 bolts.

      Torque: 42 N.m (428 kgf/cm, 31 ft.lbf) 

    2. Install the rear engine mounting bracket sub-assembly to the transaxle housing with the 4 bolts.

      Torque: 42 N.m (428 kgf/cm, 31 ft.lbf) 

      HINT: 

      Tightening order: Temporarily install bolt (A) → Tighten bolt (B) → Tighten bolt (A) → Tighten bolt (C)

  13. INSTALL REAR ENGINE MOUNTING INSULATOR 
    1. Install the rear engine mounting insulator to the rear engine mounting bracket sub-assembly with the bolt and nut.

      Torque: 72 N.m (734 kgf/cm, 53 ft.lbf) 

      NOTE:

      Align the rubber protrusion of the rear engine mounting insulator with the shape of the rear engine mounting bracket sub-assembly.

    2. Install the 2 wire harness clamp brackets to the rear engine mounting insulator with the 2 bolts.

  14. INSTALL PROPELLER SHAFT HEAT INSULATOR 
    1. Install the propeller shaft heat insulator to the automatic transaxle assembly with the 3 bolts.

      NOTE:

      Tightening order: Temporarily install bolt (A) → Temporarily install bolt (B) → Tighten bolt (C) → Tighten bolt (B) → Tighten bolt (A)

  15. INSTALL ENGINE MOUNTING INSULATOR LH 
    1. Install the engine mounting insulator LH to the automatic transaxle case sub-assembly with the 5 bolts.

      Torque: 42 N.m (428 kgf/cm, 31 ft.lbf) 

      HINT: 

      Tightening order: Temporarily install bolt (A) → Tighten bolt (B) → Tighten bolt (C) → Tighten bolt (A) → Tighten bolt (D)

  16. INSTALL TRANSVERSE ENGINE MOUNTING BRACKET 
    1. Install the transverse engine mounting bracket to the transaxle housing with the 3 bolts.

      Torque: 42 N.m (428 kgf/cm, 31 ft.lbf) 

      HINT: 

      Tightening order: Temporarily install bolt (A) → Tighten bolt (B) → Tighten bolt (C) → Tighten bolt (A)

  17. INSTALL FRONT ENGINE MOUNTING INSULATOR 
    1. Install the front engine mounting insulator to the transverse engine mounting bracket with the bolt.

      Torque: 72 N.m (734 kgf/cm, 53 ft.lbf) 

  18. INSTALL FUEL DELIVERY GUARD

  19. REMOVE ENGINE HANGERS 

    Refer to PROCEDURE - Step 29 [11/2018 - 08/2020] , or refer to PROCEDURE - Step 29 [08/2020 - 12/2021] , or refer to PROCEDURE - Step 29 [12/2021 - ]

  20. INSTALL FRONT FRAME ASSEMBLY 

    Refer to PROCEDURE - Step 20 [11/2018 - 08/2020] , or refer to PROCEDURE - Step 20 [08/2020 - 12/2021] , or refer to PROCEDURE - Step 20 [12/2021 - ]

  21. INSTALL STARTER ASSEMBLY 
  22. INSTALL FLYWHEEL HOUSING SIDE COVER 
  23. CONNECT WIRE HARNESS 
    1. Engage the wire harness clamp to connect the wire harness to the automatic transaxle assembly.

    2. Install the 2 bolts.

      Torque: 10 N.m (102 kgf/cm, 7 ft.lbf) 

    3. for Transfer (GF2A):
      1. Engage the 10 wire harness clamps and transfer wire harness connector to connect the wire harness.

      2. Install the bolt.

        Torque: 10 N.m (102 kgf/cm, 7 ft.lbf) 

    4. for Transfer (GF1A):
      1. Engage the 9 wire harness clamps to connect the wire harness.

      2. Install the bolt.

        Torque: 10 N.m (102 kgf/cm, 7 ft.lbf) 

    5. Connect the wire harness to the rack and pinion power steering gear assembly with the 2 bolts.

      Torque: 10 N.m (102 kgf/cm, 7 ft.lbf)

    6. Connect the rack and pinion power steering gear assembly connector.
      NOTE:

      Make sure that the connector is fully inserted before rotating the lock lever to engage the lock.

    7. Engage the wire harness clamp and connect the vacuum switching valve (for active control engine mount system) connector.

    8. Connect the park/neutral position switch assembly connector.

    9. Connect the connector of the transmission wire connector and rotate the lever and engage the claw.

      HINT: 

      Rotate the lever until the claw of the transmission wire connector makes a click sound.

  24. INSTALL STEERING GEAR HEAT INSULATOR 

    Refer to PROCEDURE - Step 7 [11/2018 - 02/2019] , or refer to PROCEDURE - Step 7 [02/2019 - ]

  25. INSTALL BREATHER PLUG HOSE 
    1. Install the breather plug sub-assembly and breather plug to the breather plug hose.

    2. Coat a new O-ring with ATF, and install it to the breather plug.
    3. Install the breather plug hose to the automatic transmission case sub-assembly.
      NOTE:

      Be careful not to damage the O-rings.

    4. Engage the hose clamp to connect the breather plug hose.
  26. CONNECT WATER BY-PASS HOSE ASSEMBLY

  27. INSTALL FLOW SHUTTING VALVE (NO. 1 WATER BY-PASS HOSE) 

    Refer to PROCEDURE - Step 1

  28. CONNECT VACUUM HOSE 
    1. Engage the 5 clamps to connect the vacuum hose to the automatic transaxle assembly.

    2. Connect the vacuum hose to the vacuum hose connector.

  29. INSTALL DRIVE PLATE AND TORQUE CONVERTER ASSEMBLY SETTING BOLT 
    1. Remove any remaining adhesive from the 6 drive plate and torque converter assembly setting bolts.
    2. Apply a few drops of adhesive to 2 or 3 threads at the tip of each of the 6 drive plate and torque converter assembly setting bolts.

      Toyota Genuine Adhesive 1324, Three Bond 1324 or equivalent

      NOTE:

      Make sure to install the 6 drive plate and torque converter assembly setting bolts immediately after applying adhesive to prevent foreign matter from attaching to them.

    3. Turn the crankshaft to gain access to the installation locations of the 6 drive plate and torque converter assembly setting bolts and install each drive plate and torque converter assembly setting bolt while holding the crankshaft pulley bolt with a wrench.

      Torque: 41 N.m (418 kgf/cm, 30 ft.lbf) 

      NOTE:

      First install the black-colored drive plate and torque converter assembly setting bolt, and then the remaining 5 silver-colored drive plate and torque converter assembly setting bolts.

  30. INSTALL FLYWHEEL HOUSING UNDER COVER

  31. INSTALL ENGINE ASSEMBLY WITH TRANSAXLE

  32. CHECK AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLE SYSTEM 
    NOTE:

    If automatic transaxle parts have been replaced, refer to Parts Replacement Compensation Table to determine if any additional operations are necessary.
