DTC P0071: Ambient Air Temperature Sensor Range / Performance [07/2018 - ]: Description

2018 Toyota 86 GT, Standard TransSECTION Description

The ambient air temperature sensor that is installed in the front part of the condenser detects ambient air temperature. The resistance of the ambient air temperature sensor varies depending on the change in ambient air temperature. As the ambient air temperature decreases, the resistance increases and, conversely, as the ambient air temperature increases, the resistance decreases. The ECM detects the variation of voltage due to the change in resistance of the ambient air temperature sensor using the signal from the combination meter assembly via the CAN communication.

DTC No. DTC Detection Condition Trouble Area
P0071 Either of the following conditions is met (2 trip detection logic):
  • After 21 seconds after engine start, difference between ambient air temperature and intake air temperature is higher than 20 to 32Β°C (36.0 to 57.6Β°F).
  • At engine start-up, difference between ambient air temperature and engine coolant temperature is higher than 25Β°C (45.0Β°F).

  • β€’ You smell fuel, burning insulation, or see smoke.
  • β€’ Brakes feel soft, pull hard to one side, or make grinding noises.
  • β€’ The engine overheats, stalls repeatedly, or misfires under load.
  • β€’ You are missing required tools, torque specs, or safe lifting equipment.
  • β€’ You are not confident in the next step or safety outcome.
