WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2004 Toyota RAV4. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
If a normal code is indicated during the DTC check but the problem still occurs, check the circuits for each problem symptom in the order given in table below.
NOTE:
- When replacing brake actuator assembly, sensor or etc., turn the ignition switch OFF.
- When replacing yaw rate sensor and/or the brake actuator assembly, make sure to perform yaw rate sensor zero point calibration (see PRE-CHECKΒ
).PROBLEM SYMPTOMS TABLE - ABS, VSC AND BRAKE ASSIST SYSTEMS
Symptoms Suspected Area ABS does not operate - Check the DTC that the normal code is output.
- IG power source circuit
- Speed sensor circuit
- Check the hydraulic circuit for leakage.
- When 1. to 4. are all normal and the problem still occurs, replace the brake actuator assembly.
ABS does not operate efficiently - Check the DTC that the normal code is output.
- Speed sensor circuit
- Stop light switch circuit
- Check the hydraulic circuit for leakage.
- When 1. to 4. are all normal and the problem still occurs, replace the brake actuator assembly.

When to See a Mechanic
Stop DIY work and contact a certified mechanic immediately if any of the following apply:
- β’ You smell fuel, burning insulation, or see smoke.
- β’ Brakes feel soft, pull hard to one side, or make grinding noises.
- β’ The engine overheats, stalls repeatedly, or misfires under load.
- β’ You are missing required tools, torque specs, or safe lifting equipment.
- β’ You are not confident in the next step or safety outcome.
