2004 Toyota Matrix XR, FWD, StandardSECTION Removal & Installation

  1. Drain engine coolant.
  2. Loosen belt tension by turning belt tensioner counterclockwise. Remove drive belt. Pulley bolt for belt tensioner has a left-hand thread.
  3. Disconnect 3 hoses, bolt, nut and oil cooler pipe.
  4. Remove grommet and separate camshaft position sensor connector and camshaft position sensor wire from left timing belt cover. Disconnect 3 wire harness clamps. Remove 4 bolts and left timing belt cover.
  5. Remove bolt, stud bolt and camshaft position sensor. See Fig 1.
  6. To install, reverse removal procedure. Tighten fasteners to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONSΒ .
  7. Check for engine coolant leaks.
