Preliminary Inspection
Diagnosis of shift interlock system should begin with a general visual inspection of related components, i.e., shift linkage, electrical connections, components, etc.
Inspect for aftermarket devices which could affect the operation of the shift interlock control system. Inspect easily accessible or visible system components for obvious damage or conditions which could cause the symptom.
Intermittent faulty electrical connections or wiring may be the cause of intermittent conditions. Check for loose, bent or corroded terminals and terminal tension. Check for cut, bare or pinched wiring. Simulate the condition that is potentially causing the intermittent connection, either by wiggling the connections or the wiring, test driving or performing other operations while observing scan tool, DVOM or other testing equipment. When to See a Mechanic
Stop DIY work and contact a certified mechanic immediately if any of the following apply:
- • You smell fuel, burning insulation, or see smoke.
- • Brakes feel soft, pull hard to one side, or make grinding noises.
- • The engine overheats, stalls repeatedly, or misfires under load.
- • You are missing required tools, torque specs, or safe lifting equipment.
- • You are not confident in the next step or safety outcome.
