CLOCKSPRING Centering

1994 Plymouth Sundance Base, 2D Hatchback, 2.2 D, AutomaticSECTION CLOCKSPRING Centering
WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 1994 Eagle Vision, 1994 Dodge Intrepid, 1994 Chrysler New Yorker, 1994 Chrysler LHS, and 1994 Chrysler Concorde. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
CAUTION: If rotating part of clockspring is not positioned properly with steering column and front wheels, clockspring failure may result. Use following procedure to center clockspring.
  1. Before proceeding, see SERVICE PRECAUTIONS. Disable air bag system. See DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM.
  2. Position wheels in straight ahead position. Rotate steering wheel half turn (180 degrees) to right (clockwise), and lock steering wheel. Remove cruise control switches or covers from steering wheel back shroud, and disconnect wires.
  3. Remove 2 bolts attaching air bag module to steering wheel. Lift module and disconnect electrical connectors. Remove module. Using Puller (C3428B), remove steering wheel. Remove clockspring. See CLOCKSPRING under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.
  4. Depress 2 plastic auto-locking tabs to disengage locking mechanism. See Figure . Rotate clockspring rotor in clockwise direction to end of its travel. DO NOT apply excessive torque. From end of its travel, rotate rotor 2 1/2 turns in counterclockwise direction.
  5. Horn wire should end up at bottom and air bag module wire (squib wire) at top. See Figure . If wires are not aligned as specified, rotate clockspring rotor counterclockwise until wires are in proper position, but no more than half turn (180 degrees). Engage clockspring locking mechanism.
  6. Install clockspring. See CLOCKSPRING under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Install steering wheel nut and tighten to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS TABLE at the end of this article. Rout cruise control wires under and behind air bag module mounting tabs. Connect Yellow horn wire and air bag module wire to air bag module.
  7. Install air bag module. Tighten bolts to specification. Connect cruise control wires to switches and install switches. DO NOT connect negative battery cable at this time. Perform system operation check to ensure system is functioning properly. See SYSTEM OPERATION CHECK.
