Front Clutch: Reassembly

1989 Plymouth Colt DL, 1.5 X, StandardSECTION Reassembly
  1. Lubricate "D" shaped rings with Dexron II. Install ring on piston with round side of ring facing out. Push piston into front clutch retainer by hand, being careful not to damage ring. Install return spring and spring retainer.
  2. Compress spring and spring retainer. Install small snap ring to hold spring to clutch retainer. Install steel plates and lined plates, starting with steel plate and alternating with a lined plate. If old plates are reinstalled, install them in same order and direction as removed.
NOTE: Soak new lined plates in Dexron II for at least 2 hours before installation.
  3. Install large snap ring to clutch retainer and measure clearance between snap ring and steel plate. Clearance should be .016-.024" (.4-.6 mm) on KM170 transaxles, .024-.031" (.6-.8 mm) on all others. If clearance is incorrect, replace snap ring. Snap rings are available in thicknesses from .063" (1.6 mm) to .118" (3.0 mm) in .008" (.2 mm) increments.
