Preliminary Procedure

1999 Mercury Sable LS, 4D Sedan, 3.0 SSECTION Preliminary Procedure
  1. Verify customer complaint by operating rear window defogger system. Check fuses No. 5 (5-amp) and No. 32 (10-amp) in fuse junction panel. Check MAXI fuses in battery junction box. Check for loose or corroded connectors, or damaged wiring harness. Repair or replace components as necessary.
  2. If concern remains after checking fuses and wiring harness, perform self-diagnostics on the Generic Electronic Module (GEM). Self-diagnostics are carried out using Rotunda New Generation Star (NGS) tester. See appropriate MODULE COMMUNICATIONS NETWORK article for further information.
  3. If self-diagnostics is complete and DTCs are retrieved, go to appropriate DTC test under DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE (DTC) TESTS  . If a DTC is retrieved from GEM and the appropriate DTC test is not in this article, refer to GENERIC ELECTRONIC MODULE (GEM) DTC INDEX  table. The DTC table will direct you to correct article to find appropriate test procedure.
  4. If no DTCs are retrieved, perform wiggle test. Wiggle sections of wiring harness while attempting to retrieve DTCs. If DTC is set while wiggling section of harness or connectors, inspect components and repair or replace as necessary.
  5. If a communication problem exists with GEM, see appropriate MODULE COMMUNICATIONS NETWORK article for data bus diagnostics and repair procedures.
