1983 Mercury Zephyr Z-7, 3.3 XSECTION Removal
- Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove bolts attaching managed air valve-to-valve body cover. Disconnect wiring from neutral safety switch. Disconnect throttle valve linkage and manual lever cable at respective levers.
- Remove the 2 upper transaxle-to-engine attaching bolts. Raise and support vehicle. Remove control arm-to-steering knuckle attaching bolt and nut (at ball joint). Repeat this step on remaining side. Using a pry bar, separate control arms from steering knuckles.CAUTION: Use care not to damage ball joint boot with pry bar when separating control arms from steering knuckles. Pry bar must not contact lower arm.
- Remove bolts attaching stabilizer bar brackets to frame. Remove stabilizer bar-to-control arm attaching nut and washer, then pull bar out of control arms.
- Remove bolts attaching brake hose routing clips to suspension strut brackets. Disconnect steering gear tie rods from steering knuckles. Pry drive axle shaft out of right side of transaxle and position shaft on transaxle housing.
- Using a driver, inserted through right side differential side gear, drive left side axle shaft from differential side gear. Pull axle shaft from transaxle and support out of way. Install plugs into differential seals to prevent fluid leakage.
- Remove starter support bracket and disconnect starter cable. Remove starter. Remove transaxle support bracket. Remove dust cover from torque converter housing, then remove converter attaching nuts.
- Remove nuts attaching left front insulator to body bracket, then remove bracket-to-body bolts, and remove bracket. Remove left rear insulator bracket attaching nut.
- Disconnect transaxle cooler lines at transaxle. Remove bolts attaching manual lever bracket to transaxle case. Position transmission jack under transaxle and remove the 4 remaining transaxle-to-engine attaching bolts.
- Insert a screwdriver between flywheel and torque converter, and carefully move transaxle and converter away from engine. When converter studs are clear of flywheel, lower transaxle slightly (2-3"). Disconnect speedometer cable and lower transaxle from vehicle.
NOTE:
If transaxle contacts body before converter studs clear flywheel, remove left front insulator.
