Automatic Overdrive & C-3: Removal

1983 Mercury Zephyr Z-7, 3.3 XSECTION Removal & Installation
  1. Raise and support vehicle. Place drain pan under transmission oil pan, then loosen pan bolts and allow transmission fluid to drain. Remove converter drain plug access cover and adapter plate bolts from lower end of converter housing.
  2. Remove the 4 converter-to-flywheel attaching nuts. Using a wrench on crankshaft pulley bolt, turn engine to gain access to converter attaching nuts.
    CAUTION: On belt driven overhead camshaft engines, NEVER turn engine backwards.
  3. Place a drain pan under converter, then remove converter drain plug and allow fluid in converter to drain. After all fluid has drained, reinstall drain plug and tighten.
  4. Remove drive shaft and install a seal remover tool in extension housing to prevent fluid leakage. Disconnect speedometer cable from extension housing. Disconnect shift rod and downshift rod from transmission levers.
  5. Remove starter attaching bolts and place starter out of the way. Disconnect neutral safety switch wires from switch and vacuum line from transmission vacuum unit. Position jack under transmission and raise it slightly.
  6. Remove crossmember attaching bolts from engine rear support and frame side support, then remove crossmember. Remove inlet pipe steady rest from inlet pipe and rear engine support, then disconnect muffler inlet pipe at exhaust manifold and secure it out of way.
  7. Lower transmission jack and allow transmission to hang. Place jack under front of engine and raise engine to gain access to the 2 upper converter housing-to-engine attaching bolts.
  8. Disconnect oil cooler lines at transmission and plug all openings to prevent entry of dirt. Remove lower converter housing-to-engine attaching bolts.
  9. Remove transmission filler tube. Secure transmission to jack with a safety chain. Remove the 2 upper converter housing-to- engine attaching bolts. Move transmission to the rear and down to remove it from vehicle.
