General
Mercedes-Benz is constantly working on the quality and topicality of the vehicle software. For example, updates are made available for the software of the navigation system, the telematics services control unit, the multimedia system and other vehicle systems.
The updates are provided free of charge. Software updates are transferred via the telematics services control unit's mobile radio connection.
Depending on the model involved, the multimedia system control receives software updates for the multimedia system via a WLAN antenna.
On vehicles with infrared-reflecting glass, the antennas in the outside mirrors are used for software updates of the multimedia system instead of the WLAN antenna.
The navigation map material in the vehicle can also be updated. This update can be performed via the on-line map update or manually.
Function requirements
- Mobile phone network coverage.
- The user is registered with the service center and the vehicle is linked with their account.
Function
Software update in the vehicle
Automatic updates can be activated or deactivated in the Software Update system menu of the multimedia system.
If this is deactivated, the customer must agree to each new update. If this is activated, the software update is usually installed automatically without seeking the user's consent.
The user's general consent for software updates is given by his agreement to the General Terms and Conditions of Mercedes me.
The current status of the individual software updates are displayed in the Software Update system menu of the multimedia system.
It cycles through the following statuses:
- Downloaded:
The software is being downloaded. The speed depends on the connection quality and the volume of data.
- Installation:
The software is being installed in the system. The speed depends on the extent of the changes, i.e. primarily on the volume of data.
- Activated:
The software was successfully installed. The process is complete.
- Fault:
The process was not ended successfully. In most cases, the existing vehicle software remains unchanged and continues to function. The update is repeated automatically in most cases.
All updates can be aborted by the customer during the download. Aborting is similar to pausing and can be continued later. The customer can resume and complete the update at any time.
Software updates that require a safe vehicle condition can only be installed after switching off the ignition. Installation cannot be performed automatically.
The following conditions are met in safe vehicle condition:
- The ignition is off.
- DIRECT SELECT lever in position "P".
- Activating the electronic parking brake.
- The windows, sliding roof and trunk are closed.
- Starter battery sufficiently charged.
- Engine hood closed.
- No active charging process (only in electric vehicles).
- Route guidance in navigation not active.
The user must start the installation on the central display.
Software update in Mercedes me app
In the Mercedes me connect app, software updates that have already been installed, that are pending or that have not been installed are displayed in the Software Update service.
It also provides answers to other frequently-asked questions and further information.
Online map update
Additional function requirements:
- A region is selected in the Customer Portal.
- Active Mercedes me connect "Online Map Update" service
This updates the map data for the country which is specified as the country of residence or stated in the Customer Portal.
In order to replace the map data for all countries, the user can download these as an alternative or in addition, and then install them in the multimedia system. The map data are stored on the hard drive of the multimedia system.
The on-line map update is only available in countries with Mercedes me.
Manual map update

Then: Internet browser with JAVA support.
The manual map update for several or all regions is performed by downloading the map data onto a storage medium using a PC. This is then connected to the multimedia system control via USB (Universal Serial Bus) in order to update the installed map data.
