General
The reversing camera allows the driver to view the area behind the vehicle as a live picture. He can choose between various displays. The view shown on the reversing camera display is prepared with guide lines (1 to 6). The function is operated using the multimedia system.
Function requirements
- Circuit 15 ON
- Trunk lid or liftgate closed
- No trailer operation (vehicles with trailer hitch)
Function
The reversing camera tasks include recording the area surrounding the vehicle at the rear and the generation of dynamic and static guide lines (1 to 6). The pictures recorded by the reversing camera using an extended angle of vision of 180° are processed accordingly by the integrated control unit. The current driving path displayed in the central display is based on vehicle dimensions, vehicle speed and steering wheel angle.
If the trunk lid or tailgate is not closed, the picture on the central display is overlaid with a warning message. The guide lines (1 to 6) are hidden.
During commissioning the reversing camera must be recoded using the diagnostic tester. The reversing camera is calibrated automatically after initial startup.
When reverse gear is engaged (vehicles with manual transmission) or drive range "R" is engaged (vehicles with automatic transmission) the reversing camera is activated. The reversing camera evaluates the input parameters and starts recording the surrounding area.
The reversing camera button can be used to activate the camera image from the reversing camera even when gear range "R" is engaged.
The reversing camera stops recording the surrounding area under the following conditions:
- Vehicle speed during forward travel higher than 12 km/h.
- Driving distance during forward travel higher than 10 m.
- Time period more than 255 s with reverse gear not engaged (vehicles with manual transmission) or drive range "R" not engaged (vehicles with automatic transmission).
- Drive range "P" engaged (vehicles with automatic transmission).
- Circuit 15 OFF.
The reversing camera picture data is processed by the multimedia system and displayed in the central display. The reversing camera uses the steering wheel angle and stored vehicle parameters (lane and exterior contour of the vehicle) to calculate guide lines (1 to 6), which are superimposed on the display. The steering angle is recorded by the steering wheel angle sensor.
The following displays can be selected:
- Normal view
- Wide angle view
- Trailer view (vehicles with trailer hitch)
The area behind the vehicle is displayed mirror-inverted as it is in the inside rearview mirror.
Example illustration of normal view
Example illustration of wide-angle view
The wide angle view assists the driver when reversing in unclear traffic areas.
The reversing area is shown as a three-part view with an angle of 180°. This gives the driver a clear view of crossing roads in good time, e.g. when reversing out of narrow streets.
Example illustration of trailer view (vehicles with trailer hitch)
The display on the support of reversing camera is reduced for an attempted correction (forward travel). The guide lines (1 to 6) are shown again when the reverse gear (vehicles with manual transmission) or drive range "R" (vehicles with automatic transmission) is engaged again, taking the following parameter into account:
- Time period less than 255 s
- Vehicle speed below 10 km/h
The picture displayed disappears when these parameters are exceeded. The reversing camera then remains in standby mode.
Functional restrictions
The reversing camera does not operate in the following situations or does so to a limited extent only:
- Trunk lid/tailgate open
- Heavy rain snow or fog
- Darkness.
- Reversing camera is exposed to extremely bright light.
- Area illuminated by fluorescent lamps or LEDs (display flicker).
- Fast temperature change, e.g. driving through heated garage in winter.
- Camera lens is dirty or covered up.
Additional vehicle attachments mounted at the rear, e.g. license plate bracket or rear bicycle carrier, may also restrict the viewing range and other functions of the reversing camera.
