Continuous position finding, function

Continuous location finding means that the current position of the vehicle is calculated. This is active when the ignition is switched on (circuit 15 ON), and is carried out by the navigation processor, which is integrated into the COMAND operating, display and control unit (A40/3). During the switch-on phase (software is loaded), only the basic position finding is available. After switching off the ignition (circuit 15 OFF), all important position finding parameters remain stored for a shutoff delay period (approx. 30 min).

Continuous position finding uses the following 3 methods, which mutually complement each other and thus ensure highly accurate and reliable position finding:

  • Basic position finding (dead reckoning)
  • Map-supported map matching
  • GPS satellite position finding

IMPORTANT It is possible to enter the location manually on the COMAND operating, display and control unit (A40/3) This may be useful after the vehicle has been transported (e.g. ferry or train) if there was no GPS reception at the start of the journey.
