AUDIO SYSTEM
Inspection and Verification
1. Verify the customer concern.
2. Visually inspect the following for obvious signs of mechanical or electrical damage.

3. If an obvious cause for an observed or reported concern is found, correct the cause (if possible) before proceeding to the next step.
4.
NOTE:Make sure to use the latest scan tool software release.If the cause is not visually evident, connect the integrated diagnostic system (IDS) or equivalent tester to the data link connector (DLC) and select the vehicle to be tested from the IDS or equivalent tester menu.

NOTE:The vehicle communication module (VCM) LED prove-out confirms power and ground from the DLC are provided to the VCM.If the scan tool does not communicate with the VCM:
- Check the VCM connection to the vehicle.
- Check the IDS or equivalent tester connection to the VCM.

6. If the scan tool does not communicate with the vehicle:
- Verify the ignition key is in the ON position.
- Verify the scan tool operation with a known good vehicle.

7. Carry out the network test.
- If the scan tool responds with no communication for one or more modules, see - Symptom Troubleshooting Chart - Communications Network.
- If the network test passes, retrieve and record the continuous memory DTCs.
8. Clear the continuous DTCs and carry out the self-test diagnostics for the instrument cluster.
9. If the DTCs retrieved are related to the concern, see Smart Junction Box (SJB) Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) Index. For all other DTCs, see - Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) Index - B, C And U Codes
10. If no DTCs related to the concern are retrieved, see - Symptom Related Diagnostic Procedures.
Speaker Walk-Around Test - Base AM/FM Audio Unit
NOTE:The audio unit must be turned on to enter the speaker walk-around test.
1. To enter the test, press and hold preset buttons 3 and 6 simultaneously for approximately 3 seconds, then release.
2. The test applies sound to each speaker for 1-2 seconds. Speakers are tested in the following sequence: RH, LH.
3. To exit the test, turn the key to OFF or turn the audio unit off.
4. If the concern remains and the fault is not detected, see - Symptom Related Diagnostic Procedures.
Speaker Walk-Around Test - All Except Base AM/FM Audio Unit
NOTE:The audio unit must be turned on and in radio tuner mode (AM/FM) to enter the speaker walk-around test or self-diagnostic mode.
NOTE:The self-diagnostic mode can only be entered while in the speaker walk-around test.
1. To enter the speaker walk-around test, press and hold preset buttons 3 and 6 simultaneously for approximately 3 seconds, then release.
2. The test applies sound to each speaker for 1-2 seconds. Speakers are tested and shown on the display in the following sequence: RF, LF, LR, RR, SUBWOOFER.
3. To exit the test, turn the key to OFF, turn the audio unit off, or press preset button 1 for diagnostics.
NOTE:Always document, clear, and carry out the self-test again.
4. The self-diagnostic mode has 5 manual tests available:
- Preset button 1 = Enter diagnostics. This test enters diagnostics from the speaker walk-around test. The on-demand self-test of the audio subsystem is performed. This tests for concerns with random access memory (RAM), read only memory (ROM) or electronically etched programmable read only memory (EEPROM).
- Preset button 2 = Continuous DTCs. This test enters diagnostics from the speaker walk-around test. This test displays any diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) currently set.
- Preset button 3 = Signal strength test. This test shows the average signal strength of the currently tuned frequency over a 5 second interval.
- Preset button 4 = Software configuration level. This test queries each audio unit system controller for its software configuration level.
- Preset button 5 = Display test. This test lights all the display segments for 5 seconds, then turns all segments off.
5. To exit the self-diagnostic mode, turn the key to OFF or turn the audio unit off.
6. If the DTCs retrieved are related to the concern, go to the Audio Unit Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) Index.
7. If the concern remains and the fault is not detected, see - Symptom Related Diagnostic Procedures.
