DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURE - TRANSAXLE FLUID TEMPERATURE SENSOR

2 TRANSAXLE FLUID TEMPERATURE (TFT) SENSOR
STEP INSPECTION ACTION
1 ELECTRONIC DIAGNOSTICS
  • Make sure the transaxle vehicle harness connector is fully seated, terminals are fully engaged in connector and in good condition before proceeding.
  • Have the items been checked?
Yes Go to next step.
No CARRY OUT checks. CLEAR the DTCs. RERUN quick test.
2 ELECTRONIC DIAGNOSTICS
  • Key OFF.
  • Connect the diagnostic tool.
  • Key ON, Engine OFF (KOEO).
  • Select Diagnostic Data Link.
  • Select Powertrain Control Module (PCM).
  • Select PID/Data Monitor and Record.
  • Does the vehicle enter PID/Data Monitor and Record?
Yes REMAIN in PID/Data Control. Go to next step.
No REPEAT procedure to enter PID. If vehicle did not enter PID, see DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE (DTC) INDEX - POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE (PCM) .
3 CHECK ELECTRICAL SIGNAL OPERATION
  • While monitoring the TFT PIDs, carry out the following test: If transaxle is cold, run transaxle to warm it up. If transaxle is warm, allow transaxle to cool down.
  • Do the TFT PIDs increase as the transaxle is warmed or decrease as the transaxle is cooled or does the TFT or TFTV drop in and out-of-range?
Yes If the TFT PIDs increase as the transaxle is warmed or decrease as the transaxle is cooled, CLEAR all DTCs. ROAD TEST to verify if concern is still present. If concern is still present, see OTHER CONCERNS: TRANSAXLE OVERHEATING  to diagnose transaxle overheating. If the TFT or TFTV is in and out-of-range, INSPECT for an intermittent concern in the internal/external harness, sensor or connector.
No Go to next step.
4 CHECK ELECTRICAL SIGNAL OPERATION
CAUTION:
  • Do not pry on the connector. This will damage the connector and can result in a transaxle concern. Press button and pull up on the transaxle vehicle harness connector.

  • Key OFF.
  • Disconnect the Transmission Hardware Unit 0140-227.
  • Inspect both ends of the connector for damaged or pushed out pins, corrosion, loose wires and missing or damaged seals.
  • Key ON, Engine OFF (KOEO).
  • Measure the voltage between transmission hardware unit 0140-227 pin 3 (W/R) harness side and transmission hardware unit 0140-227 pin 2 (GY/R) harness side.
  • Is the voltage between 4.75 and 5.25 volts?
Yes Go to step 7.
No Go to next step.
5 CHECK RESISTANCE OF TFT SENSOR
  • Disconnect the Transmission Hardware Unit 0140-227.
  • Measure the resistance between transmission hardware unit 0140-227 pin 3 (W/R) harness side and transmission hardware unit 0140-227 pin 2 (GY/R) harness side.
  • Record the resistance.
  • The resistance should be approximately within the range shown on the table below.
  • Is the resistance within range?
Yes See DIAGNOSIS BY SYMPTOM .
No Go to next step.
6 CHECK CONTINUITY OF TFT AND SIGNAL RTN CIRCUITS
  • Key OFF.
  • Disconnect the Transmission Hardware Unit 0140-227.
  • Disconnect the PCM 0140-175t/275t.
  • Measure the resistance between PCM 0140-175t/275t pin 29 (B/O) harness side and transmission hardware unit 0140-227 pin 3 (W/R) harness side.
  • Measure the resistance between PCM 0140-175t/275t pin 41 (GY/R) harness side and transmission hardware unit 0140-227 pin 2 (GY/R) harness side.
  • Are both resistances less than 5 ohms?
Yes Go to next step.
No REPAIR open circuit(s). RECONNECT all components. CLEAR the DTCs. RERUN quick test.
7 CHECK TFT CIRCUIT FOR SHORT TO VPWR AND GROUND
  • Measure the resistance between PCM 0140-175t/275t pin 29 (B/O) harness side and PCM 0140-175b/275b pin 35 (W/R) harness side and PCM 0140-175b/275b pin 36 (W/R) harness side.
  • Measure the resistance between PCM 0140-175t/275t pin 29 (B/O) harness side and PCM 0140-175t/275t pin 41 (GY/R), PCM 0140-175b/275b pin 47 (B) harness side and between PCM 0140-175b/275b pin 48 (B) harness side and PCM 0140-175b/275b pin 49 (B) harness side.
  • Is each resistance greater than 10,000 ohms?
Yes Go to next step.
No REPAIR shorted circuit(s). RECONNECT all components. CLEAR the DTCs. RERUN quick test.
8 CHECK TFT SENSOR/HARNESS FOR SHORT TO GROUND
  • Disconnect the Transaxle Connector.
  • Reconnect the Transmission Tester.
  • Measure the resistance between BAT-jack (engine ground) and appropriate jack (-TFT and +TFT).

Is the resistance greater than 10,000 ohms?
Yes INSTALL a new solenoid assembly. RERUN On-Board Diagnostics test.
No INSTALL a new powertrain control module. RERUN On-Board Diagnostics test.

When to See a Mechanic

Stop DIY work and contact a certified mechanic immediately if any of the following apply:

  • You smell fuel, burning insulation, or see smoke.
  • Brakes feel soft, pull hard to one side, or make grinding noises.
  • The engine overheats, stalls repeatedly, or misfires under load.
  • You are missing required tools, torque specs, or safe lifting equipment.
  • You are not confident in the next step or safety outcome.
