Axle Shafts: Disassembly

1998 Lexus GS 300SECTION Disassembly
  1. Place inboard CV joint flange in a soft-jawed vise. Using a screwdriver and hammer, remove end cover gasket. Install bolts, nuts and washers to inboard CV joint to keep it together. Tighten bolts and nuts by hand and avoid scratching flange surface. Using a screwdriver, remove boot clamps. Use paint to apply mating marks on inboard CV joint and axle shaft. DO NOT use punch marks.
  2. Remove snap ring on inboard end of axle shaft. Using spacer (09726-01031), press inboard CV joint from axle shaft. Place inboard CV joint into a soft-jawed vise. Using a screwdriver and hammer, remove CV joint cover from inboard CV joint. Remove CV joint boots.
  3. Mount outboard joint in a soft-jawed vise. Using a screwdriver and hammer, remove dust deflector. Be careful not to damage ABS speed sensor rotor.
