Axle Shafts: Removal
1998 Lexus GS 300SECTION Removal, Disassembly, Reassembly & Installation
- On LS400 models equipped with air suspension, turn height control switch to OFF position. On all vehicles, raise and support vehicle. Remove rear wheel. Apply brakes and remove rear axle nut.
- If necessary, remove suspension brace and lower tailpipe assembly. Support tailpipe assembly using wire. Remove cotter pin and lock cap. Press brake pedal and remove lock nut. On models equipped with air suspension, remove 2 bolts attaching rear height sensor to vehicle. See Fig 1.
- Suspend rear height sensor using wire. On all models, use paint to apply mating marks to axle shaft flange and side gear shaft flange. DO NOT use punch marks.
- While pressing brake pedal, remove 6 bolts attaching axle shaft to side gear shaft flange. Hold inboard CV joint to prevent joint from bending too much. Using a plastic-faced hammer, remove axle shaft from axle hub assembly.
- During removal, use care to not damage CV joint boots, speed sensor rotor on axle shaft and oil seal in axle hub. Remove axle shaft from vehicle. Avoid bending outboard CV joint more than necessary.
