- Verify the customer concern.
- Verify the stoplamps operate correctly by pressing and releasing the brake pedal with the ignition switch in the OFF position. If the stoplamps do not operate correctly, refer to EXTERIOR LIGHTING . If the stoplamps operate correctly, proceed to the next step.
- Verify the base brake system operates correctly. If any concerns are present address them before continuing with any anti-lock brake system (ABS) concerns. Refer to BRAKE SYSTEM . If the stoplamps operate correctly, proceed to the next step.
- Verify that the PRNDL operates correctly. If the PRNDL does not operate correctly, refer to INFORMATION, GAUGES & WARNING DEVICES . If the PRNDL operates correctly, proceed to the next step.
- Visually inspect for obvious signs of mechanical or electrical damage:MECHANICAL AND ELECTRICAL COMPONENTS VISUAL INSPECTION DETAILS
Mechanical Electrical - Wheel and tire sizes
- Brake fluid level
- Hydraulic control unit (HCU)
- Base brake system
- Brake booster vacuum hose
- Steering components, suspension components and tire size
- Steering wheel rotation sensor
- Tire inflation
- Bussed electrical center (BEC) fuse(s):
- 8 (40A)
- 12 (40A)
- Smart junction box (SJB) fuse(s):
- 15 (10A)
- 16 (5A)
- 18 (10A)
- Anti-lock brake system (ABS) module
- Wheel speed sensor
- Stability assist switch
- Brake pedal position (BPP) switch
- Steering wheel rotation sensor
- Brake booster solenoid
- Brake booster release switch
- Brake pressure transducer
- Sensor cluster
- Stoplamp isolation relay
- Brake fluid level switch
- Circuitry
- If an obvious cause for an observed or reported concern is found, correct the cause (if possible) before proceeding to the next step. If the cause is not visually evident, connect the diagnostic tool to the data link connector (DLC) and select the vehicle to be tested from the diagnostic tool menu. If the diagnostic tool does not communicate with the vehicle:
- check that the program card is correctly installed.
- check the connections to the vehicle.
- check the ignition switch position.
- If the diagnostic tool still does not communicate with the vehicle, refer to the diagnostic tool operating manual.
- Carry out the diagnostic tool data link test. If the diagnostic tool responds with:
- SCP circuit fault; all electronic control units no response/not equipped, refer to MODULE COMMUNICATIONS NETWORK .
- No response/not equipped for the ABS module, GO to PINPOINT TEST AΒ .
- System passed, retrieve and record the continuous diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs). Erase the continuous DTCs. Test drive the vehicle. Be sure to include at lease one stop that includes ABS activation. Carry out self-test diagnostics for the SJB.
- If the DTCs retrieved are related to the concern, go to the ANTI-LOCK BRAKE SYSTEM (ABS) MODULE DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE (DTC) INDEXΒ to continue diagnostics.
- If no DTCs related to the concern are retrieved, GO to SYMPTOM CHARTΒ to continue diagnostics.
NOTE:
The need to recalibrate the module is indicated by the active/fail lamp flashing. There are other service actions that can require recalibration when there is no flashing lamp.
