Diagnostic Procedures

2001 Chevrolet Cavalier LS, 2.4 TSECTION Diagnostic Procedures
  1. Perform powertrain diagnostic system check. See POWERTRAIN DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK (GASOLINE)Β  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. After performing powertrain diagnostic system check, go to next step.
  2. If DTCs P0446, P0452, P0453, P0461, P0462, P0463 or P1441 are also set. see DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE DEFINITIONSΒ  . If DTCs P0446, P0452, P0453, P0461, P0462, P0463 or P1441 are not set, go to next step.
  3. Inspect EVAP system for the following conditions:
    • Loose, missing, or damaged service port Schrader valve.
    • Loose, incorrect, missing, or damaged fuel fill cap.
    • Damaged EVAP canister purge valve.

Raise vehicle on hoist. Inspect EVAP system for the following conditions:

    • Disconnected, improperly routed, kinked, or damaged EVAP pipes and hoses.
    • Damaged EVAP canister vent valve or EVAP canister.

If problem was found, repair as necessary. After repairs, go to step Β 6 . If problem was not found, go to next step.

  4. NOTE: The following steps require EVAP Pressure/Purge Diagnostic Station (J 41413), and Fuel Tank Cap Adapter (J 41415-40).
  5. Always zero EVAP pressure and vacuum (in. H2O) gauges on EVAP pressure/purge diagnostic station before proceeding with diagnosis. Install fuel tank cap adapter. Connect EVAP pressure/purge diagnostic station and fuel tank cap to fuel tank cap adapter. Turn ignition on, engine off. Using scan tool, DTCs from PCM. Command EVAP vent valve on using scan tool. Pressurize EVAP system to 15 in. H2O with EVAP pressure/purge diagnostic station. Place control knob on EVAP pressure/purge diagnostic station to OFF/HOLD position. Monitor EVAP system pressure on EVAP pressure/purge diagnostic station for 5 minutes. If EVAP system pressure remains constant, see DIAGNOSTIC AIDSΒ  . If EVAP system pressure does not remain constant, go to next step.
  6. NOTE: It may be necessary to partially lower fuel tank to inspect components located in upper portion of the tank.
  7. Using EVAP pressure/purge diagnostic station, continuously attempt to pressurize EVAP system. Using ultrasonic leak detector, inspect for leaks in the following locations:
    1. EVAP system purge pipe.
    2. EVAP vapor pipe.
    3. Canister/fuel tank.
    4. EVAP vent hose/pipe.
    5. Fuel fill pipe/hose and fuel fill cap.
    6. EVAP canister.
    7. EVAP canister vent valve.
    8. EVAP canister purge valve.
    9. Fuel sender assembly and/or seal.
    10. Fuel Tank Pressure (FTP) sensor seal.
    11. Fill limiter vent valve, pressure relief valve, rollover valves, and fuel tank.

If problem was found, repair as necessary. After repairs, go to next step. If problem was not found, see DIAGNOSTIC AIDSΒ  .

  8. Turn ignition on, engine off. Command EVAP vent valve on using scan tool. Pressurize EVAP system to 15 in. H2O using EVAP pressure/purge diagnostic station. Place control knob on EVAP pressure/purge diagnostic station to OFF/HOLD position. Monitor EVAP system pressure on EVAP pressure/purge diagnostic station for 5 seconds. If EVAP system pressure remains constant, go to next step. If EVAP system pressure does not remain constant, go to step Β 2 .
  9. Using scan tool, observe stored information. If any DTCs are displayed that have not been diagnosed, see DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE DEFINITIONSΒ  .
