NOTE:
Check for applicable Technical Service Bulletins (TSBs) before proceeding. DO NOT perform the following procedure if driveability conditions are not present. DO NOT turn ignition off during the following procedure or clear DTCs unless instructed to do so.
- If vehicle does not crank, see appropriate STARTERS article in STARTING & CHARGING SYSTEMS. Ensure battery is fully charged and cables are clean and tight. Ensure PCM grounds are clean, tight, and in proper location. Install scan tool. If scan tool turns on, go to next step. If scan tool does not turn on, see SCAN TOOL DOES NOT POWER UP in appropriate BODY CONTROL MODULES article.
- Turn ignition on, engine off. Attempt to establish communication with Body Control Module (BCM), Electronic Brake Control Module (EBCM), Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC), PCM, Sensing and Diagnostic Module (SDM), and Vehicle Theft Deterrent (VTD) module. If scan tool communicates with all control modules, go to next step. If scan tool does not communicate with all control modules, see SCAN TOOL DOES NOT COMMUNICATE WITH CLASS 2 DEVICE in appropriate BODY CONTROL MODULES article.
- Attempt to start engine. If engine starts and idles, go to next step. If engine does not start and idle, see appropriate BASIC DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURES article.
- Select DTC display function for BCM, EBCM, IPC, PCM, SDM and VTD. If DTCs are present, record DTCs, which module set DTC and failure record for DTC. Go to next step. If DTCs are not present, go to step Β 7 .
- If scan tool displays DTCs which begin with "U", see SCAN TOOL DOES NOT COMMUNICATE WITH CLASS 2 DEVICE in appropriate BODY CONTROL MODULES article. If scan tool does not display DTCs which begin with "U", go to next step.
- If scan tool displays DTC P0562, P0563, P0621 or P0622, see appropriate GENERATORS & REGULATORS article in STARTING & CHARGING SYSTEMS. If scan tool does not display DTC P0562, P0563, P0621 or P0622, go to DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE DEFINITIONSΒ .
- If customer's concern is with the transmission, see appropriate ELECTRONIC CONTROLS article in AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSIONS or MANUAL TRANSMISSIONS article. If customer's concern is not with the transmission, go to next step.
- If customer's concern is MIL inoperative, see MIL INOPERATIVEΒ under SYSTEM TESTS. If customer's concern is MIL always on, see MIL ON STEADY (GASOLINE)Β under SYSTEM TESTS. If customer's concern is driveability, see appropriate TROUBLE SHOOTING - NO CODES article.
