Instrument Cluster System Check

2000 Buick Park Avenue Base, 3.8 KSECTION Instrument Cluster System Check
  1. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Close front doors. Unbuckle left front seat belt. Ensure parking brake is not engaged. Observe instrument cluster warning light indicators while IPC module performs bulb check. Following indicators will illuminate briefly: ABS, BRAKE, CRUISE, MPH (or KM/H), OIL, SECURITY, SERVICE ENGINE SOON, SERVICE VEHICLE SOON, TRAC OFF (if equipped), VOLTS, low fuel indicator on fuel gauge and high temperature indicator on temperature gauge. AIR BAG will flash 7 times. SEAT BELT will illuminate for about 70 seconds. If all indicator lights operate as specified, go to next step. If any indicator lights do not operate as specified, go to appropriate procedure for symptoms present. See SYMPTOM INDEX  table under SYSTEM TESTS.
  2. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Buckle left front seat belt. Turn ignition switch to ON position. SEAT BELT indicator should illuminate briefly. Apply parking brake. BRAKE light should illuminate. Check headlight high and low beams, turn signal and hazard flasher operation. Check instrument panel dimmer switch. If gauges and indicator lights operate properly, go to next step. If gauges and/or indicator lights do not operate properly, go to appropriate procedure for symptoms present. See SYMPTOM INDEX  table under SYSTEM TESTS.
  3. Start engine. Check fuel gauge, temperature gauge and tachometer for proper operation. If gauges do not operate properly, go to appropriate procedure for symptoms present. See SYMPTOM INDEX  table under SYSTEM TESTS. If gauges operate properly, go to next step.
  4. Press ENG/MET button. Odometer and digital speedometer displays should change unit values between MPH and KM/H. If display does not change, or MPH or KM/H display does not operate, go to appropriate procedure for symptoms present. See SYMPTOM INDEX  table under SYSTEM TESTS. If display changes properly and vehicle has base instrument panel, go to next step. If display changes properly and vehicle has premium instrument panel with Driver Information Center (DIC), go to step  6 .
  5. Reset trip odometer. Trip odometer should reset to zero. If trip odometer does not reset properly, go to appropriate procedure for symptoms present. See SYMPTOM INDEX  table under SYSTEM TESTS. If trip odometer resets properly, go to step  7 .
  6. On premium DIC switch, press GAUGE button on DIC switch while observing DIC switch display cycle through all gauge messages. Press FUEL INFO button on DIC switch while observing DIC switch display cycle through all fuel messages. Press ODO/TRIP button on DIC switch while observing DIC switch display cycle through all trip messages. Press RESET button on DIC switch while observing DIC switch display cycle through all trip odometer should reset to zero. If any DIC switch feature does not operate properly or cycle through all messages, go to appropriate procedure for symptoms present. See SYMPTOM INDEX  table under SYSTEM TESTS. If all features are okay, go to next step.
  7. On all models, while depressing brake pedal, move gear selector lever through all gear positions. If gear indicator (PRNDL display) does not operate properly in all gear positions, go to appropriate procedure for symptoms present. See SYMPTOM INDEX  table under SYSTEM TESTS. If PRNDL display operates in all gear positions, go to next step.
  8. Test drive vehicle. Check speedometer operation. If speedometer does not operate properly, go to appropriate procedure for symptoms present. See SYMPTOM INDEX  table under SYSTEM TESTS.
