SUBJECT
ZF SMG FC 4F6F - Hydraulic Pump Failure
MODEL
E85 M54 with ZF SMG GS6-37BZ
E46 M54 with ZF SMG GS6-37BZ
E60 M54, N52 and ZF SMG GS6-37BZ
E60, E63, E64 N62, N62TU and ZF SMG GS6-53BZ
SITUATION
^ SMG transmission goes into fail-safe mode, Trans Light illuminated.
^ Gears cannot be selected, or changed. If SMG transmission is stuck in any gear, engine cannot be restarted.
^ Fault code 4F6F "Hydraulic pump failure" is stored in SMG module. In some cases additional SMG fault codes may be present:
^ 4F6E - "Low pressure in hydraulic circuit", and/or
^ 4FB4 - "Main microprocessor fault, detected by safety level 2", and/or
^ 4F72 - "Faulty clutch system"
CAUSE
Failure of the SMG hydraulic pump caused by internal leakage.
CORRECTION
On a customer complaint basis only:
^ Interrogate SMG fault memory and execute the appropriate DIS test modules.
^ If the SMG FC 4F6F is found, then replace SMG hydraulic pump with the improved part (P/N 23 42 7 507 107).
For SMG hydraulic pump replacement procedure refer to RA 23 42 550, found in BMW TIS.
IMPORTANT:
1. Prior to any work on SMG hydraulic system, the operating pressure must be reduced through the test module: "Before working on hydraulic system" found in Service Function of DIS/GT1
2. After the work is completed, the SMG hydraulic system must be vented through the test module: "Before working on hydraulic system" found in Service Function of DIS/GT1 Check and top-off SMG transmission hydraulic fluid level using Pentosin CHF 11S
^ Also, replace the pump relay (P/N 61 36 6 901 469 for E46 vehicles; P/N 61 36 8 366 646 for E85 and E60/63/64 vehicles).
[NEW] IMPORTANT:
On the E46 M54 vehicles produced up to 07/04, if the originally installed pump relay is PN 61 36 8 366 646 (salmon color), the relay adaptor harness kit (PN 12 63 7 545 666) has to be retrofitted prior to the new relay installation. Follow Service Information B23 03 04 (July 2004) for retrofitting repair procedure and warranty information.
^ Clear SMG fault memory and perform the SMG adaptation procedure using DIS/GT1 The calibration of the SMG gearbox must be performed through the test module: "Teach gearbox" found in Service Function of DIS/GT1
