SUBJECT
M54, NEW M56- DME Fault Code 094, 2760 or 2761 - Secondary Air System Air Mass Meter

MODEL
E53 (X5 3.0) vehicles from 10/03
E46, NEW E60, E83 vehicles from 09/02

SITUATION
"Service Engine Soon" light is illuminated. The following secondary air system related faults are stored in the DME control module:
- FC 094: Hot film air mass sensor, secondary air
- FC 2760: Hot-film air mass sensor, secondary air system faults and/or
- FC 2761: Hot-film air mass sensor, secondary air

CAUSE
The secondary air system non-return valve may freeze shut under certain environmental conditions (e.g. extremely low ambient temperatures).

PROCEDURE
1. Perform the test plan to determine if the system operates properly. If the test plan completes without error, then proceed to Step 2. If the system does not operate properly, continue diagnosis using test plan to determine the failure.
2. On a customer complaint basis only, when the above listed faults are stored in the DME, reprogram the DME control module using the current version of Progman. The improved DME software was introduced since DIS CD V39.1 and Progman V13.2.

Important:
Do not replace any parts if the system is determined to be operating properly by the test plan. The hot-film air mass meter or the non-return valve of the secondary air system does not cause this type of complaint.

WARRANTY INFORMATION
Covered under the terms of the BMW New Vehicle Limited Warranty.
