SUBJECT
Front Window Initialization
MODEL
E46 (3 Series) Convertible produced from 09/2003.
SITUATION
Front window initialization fails.
CAUSE
The power windows will need to be initialized if:
1. The battery has been disconnected.
2. The power supply to either door is cut.
3. The side windows have been adjusted (e.g. after the hardtop has been fitted).
PROCEDURE
The power windows must be reinitialized with the doors and soft-top closed or the hard top fitted.
Follow the steps below to initialize the front windows.
1. Close both doors and the soft top (or hardtop installed).
2. Start the engine.
3. Open all four windows.
4. Close the front windows without releasing the power window switches and hold the switches up for at least three seconds after the windows have closed completely.
5. Open the front windows by approximately 2/3 of the way down. It is important to stop the windows at the same spot each time.
6. Close the front windows without releasing the power window switches and hold the switches up for at least 3 seconds after the windows have closed completely.
7. Open the front windows by approximately 2/3 of the way down. It is important to stop the windows at the same spot each time.
8. Close the front windows without releasing the power window switches and hold the switches holds up for at least 3 seconds after the windows have closed completely.
9. Open the front windows by approximately 2/3 of the way down. It is important to stop the windows at the same spot each time.
10. Check whether the initialization procedure was successful: Close the front side windows using the one-touch feature function and ensure that this works correctly.
11. Check the anti-trap function by inserting a plastic rod with a diameter greater than 6 mm in the left front window between the door window and the soft-top/hardtop and then closing the window with the one touch function. If the function is OK, the anti-trap function will respond.
[NEW] If the windows fail to initialize, leave the rear windows in the closed position and only open the front windows during step 3. Then perform steps 7 - 8 up to 4 times in succession.
[NEW] If the windows still fail to initialize, please submit a detailed PuMA case to the Body and Chassis Technical Hotline.
Notes:
1. Closing or opening either the front or rear windows can be performed simultaneously or individually.
2. The entire initialization procedure will need to be repeated if there are any interruptions while performing the above steps.
3. If the vehicle battery is disconnected or discharged, the initialization procedure will need to be carried out.
