CONDITION
Unnecessary replacement of LDP due to mis-diagnosed leakage.
SERVICE
As long as the Leak Detection Pump -V144- is operational you can quickly diagnose it as OK or leaking using the following method.
Prior to checking the LDP:
- Ensure that vacuum at vacuum hose to LDP item -2- (see Fig 4) is equal to vacuum at port (source) at throttle body.
EVAP CANISTER PURGE VALVE -N80-, CHECKING
- Input "070" on keypad. See Fig 3.
- Press "Q" on keypad to confirm.
- Press "Activate" button.
After test completes:
- VAS 5051 should indicate "TBV OK".
If test continues to indicate "TBV not OK":
- Replace EVAP Canister Purge valve -N80-.
- Repeat test.
If test continues to indicate "TBV OK":
- Proceed with following steps.
LDP -V144-, CHECKING
- Locate LDP -V144- (see appropriate Repair Manual, Repair Group 20- "Leak Detection Pump (LDP) -V144-, removing and installing").
- Clamp off LDP outlet (EVAP side) -1- using Special Tool No. 3094 or equivalent. See Fig 4.
- Remove fuel cap.CAUTION: Clamp only soft rubber lines when isolating a leak. To avoid risk of damage, never clamp hard plastic lines!
- Select the < button.
- Input "071" on keypad. See Fig 5.
- Press "Q" on keypad to confirm.
- Press "Activate" button.
- Pump should activate.
- VAS 5051 should indicate "system OK".
- Repeat test several times to verify result.
If test continues to indicate "system OK":
- Pump is OK (leak is not at the pump or hose connections at pump).
- Switch ignition OFF.
- Reinstall fuel cap.
- Test EVAP system for leaks using the KLI9210 EVAP Tester (see Repair Manual Repair Group 20).
If LDP fails test:
- Pump or hose connection between pinched hose -1- and pump are not OK.
- Check and ensure hose -1- and/or connections between EVAP Canister and LDP are not leaking. See Fig 6.
- Recheck using "071" again and verify that hose and connection are OK.
If hose connection(s) are NOT OK:
- Repair connection or replace hose -1- as necessary.
If hose and connection at pump are OK:
- Replace pump.
- Recheck using "071" again and verify that new LDP operates correctly.
- Reinstall fuel cap.
- Remove clamp and check entire EVAP system.
- Erase any stored DTCs.
