SERVICE

As long as the Leak Detection Pump -V144- is operational you can quickly diagnose it as OK or leaking using the following method.

Prior to checking the LDP:

  • Ensure that vacuum at vacuum hose to LDP item -2- (see Fig 4) is equal to vacuum at port (source) at throttle body.
    • Connect the VAS 5051 or VAS 5052 Diagnostic tool.
    • Start engine and run at idle only.
    • From VAS 5051 Start-up screen, select "Vehicle self diagnosis".
    • Select vehicle system "01- Engine electronics". See Fig 1.
Fig 1: VAS Display - Select Vehicle System "01- Engine Electronics"

EVAP CANISTER PURGE VALVE -N80-, CHECKING

  • Input "070" on keypad. See Fig 3.
Fig 3: VAS Display - Input "070" On Keypad
    G03343217
  • Press "Q" on keypad to confirm.
  • Press "Activate" button.

After test completes:

  • VAS 5051 should indicate "TBV OK".

If test continues to indicate "TBV not OK":

  • Replace EVAP Canister Purge valve -N80-.
  • Repeat test.

If test continues to indicate "TBV OK":

  • Proceed with following steps.

LDP -V144-, CHECKING

  • Locate LDP -V144- (see appropriate Repair Manual, Repair Group 20- "Leak Detection Pump (LDP) -V144-, removing and installing").
  • Clamp off LDP outlet (EVAP side) -1- using Special Tool No. 3094 or equivalent. See Fig 4.

  • Select the < button.
  • Input "071" on keypad. See Fig 5.
Fig 5: VAS Display - Input "071" On Keypad
    G03343219
  • Press "Q" on keypad to confirm.
  • Press "Activate" button.
    • Pump should activate.
    • VAS 5051 should indicate "system OK".
  • Repeat test several times to verify result.
NOTE: You MUST remove and install the clamp (to release pressure), prior to repeating test.

If test continues to indicate "system OK":

  • Pump is OK (leak is not at the pump or hose connections at pump).
  • Switch ignition OFF.
  • Reinstall fuel cap.
  • Test EVAP system for leaks using the KLI9210 EVAP Tester (see Repair Manual Repair Group 20).

If LDP fails test:

  • Pump or hose connection between pinched hose -1- and pump are not OK.
  • Check and ensure hose -1- and/or connections between EVAP Canister and LDP are not leaking. See Fig 6.
    Fig 6: Leak Detection Pump
    G03343220
  • Recheck using "071" again and verify that hose and connection are OK.

If hose connection(s) are NOT OK:

  • Repair connection or replace hose -1- as necessary.

If hose and connection at pump are OK:

  • Replace pump.
  • Recheck using "071" again and verify that new LDP operates correctly.
  • Reinstall fuel cap.
  • Remove clamp and check entire EVAP system.
  • Erase any stored DTCs.
