CRUISE CONTROL, REPAIRING

CRUISE CONTROL CONTROL MODULE, REMOVING/INSTALLING

- Remove glove compartment.

- Disconnect Control Module -1- by removing Phillips screw -3- from speed nut -2-. See Fig 1 . Tightening torque: 3 N.m. (28 in-lb).

- Remove Control Module and disconnect harness connector.

VACUUM SERVO LINKAGE ADJUSTING (6-CYLINDER)

- Throttle at idle position (engine running at idle speed), adjust linkage with adjuster nut -1- to achieve a clearance of approx. 0.5 ... 1 mm (.019 to .039 in.) between the bushing and stop plate -2-. See Fig 2 .

VACUUM SERVO, REMOVING/INSTALLING

- Remove linkage.

- Remove vacuum hose.

- Remove servo unit from bracket. See Fig 3 . Tightening torque:

25 N.m (18 ft-lb).

VACUUM PUMP, REMOVING/INSTALLING

  • The vacuum pump is installed below the ABS unit, and can be removed from the outside after removing the left wheel opening moulding.

- Remove retaining nut -3- 5 N.m (44 in-lb) and pull out pump from the wheel opening. See Fig 4 .

- Pull vacuum pump -1- upward out of bracket -2- complete with rubber grommets. See Fig 4 .

- -4- hose to servo unit. See Fig 4 .

STEERING COLUMN SWITCH/CRUISE CONTROL SWITCH, REMOVING/INSTALLING

- Removing and installing steering column switches see Repair Manual page 94-20.

CLUTCH PEDAL VENT VALVE -1-/BRAKE PEDAL VENT VALVE -2-, REMOVING

- Remove lower instrument panel cover, left.

- Remove wire connector and vacuum hose from vent valve.

- Use special tool VAG 2041 or equivalent (locally available) to remove valve, press out vent valve through bushing. See Fig 5 .

CLUTCH PEDAL VENT VALVE -1-/BRAKE PEDAL VENT VALVE -2-, INSTALLING/ADJUSTING

- Insert vent valve into bushing by hand.

- Using a 10 mm nut driver, press in vent valve through bushing until seated. See Fig 6 .

- To adjust vent valve, pull back clutch or brake pedal to stop.

CRUISE CONTROL VACUUM SYSTEM, CHECKING

- Remove vacuum hose from vacuum pump.

- Press in diaphragm of servo unit.

- Plug disconnected hose.

The diaphragm in the servo unit must remain in the same position and must not move. In this case the system is airtight.

If the diaphragm moves back to its original position, there is a leak in the system.

NOTE: Leaks can be caused by incorrectly adjusted vent valves, a leaking actuator or split/cracked/loose vacuum hoses.
