Millimeter Wave Radar Aiming: Adjustment
- Front Grille Cover - Remove
- Millimeter Wave Radar - Aim
NOTE: The millimeter wave radar must be re-aimed if the unit is removed, replaced or if an aiming error occurs. The ACC indicator comes on if the aiming process is not completed correctly, if there is dust/dirt on the radar unit surface, or if an aiming error occurs:
- Millimeter wave radar aiming error: DTC P2583-64
- Millimeter wave radar or grille surface is contaminated with dust, dirt, ice, or snow: DTC P2583-97
- Millimeter wave radar aiming incomplete: DTC P2583-54
Incomplete aiming will also cause the MID to indicate certain temporary codes; refer to the Aiming failure codes (if the aiming is incomplete).
Prepare the items shown:
- HDS
- Tape measure and scale
- Felt-tip pen
- Tape
Before Aiming:
- Aiming the millimeter wave radar requires the HDS.
- Clean the surface of the millimeter wave radar.
- Make sure that all of the tires are collect size and inflated to the proper pressure.
- Make sure the fuel tank is full.
- Remove all cargo from the vehicle except the tool kit.
- Make sure the steering wheel is pointed straight ahead, and do not turn it after setting up the vehicle.
- Park the vehicle on level ground in a wide open space to avoid errors caused by reflecting objects. The space needs to be 32.8 ft (10 m) in front, 13.1 ft (4 m) in width and 4.92 ft (1.5 m) in height.
Vertical Aiming
NOTE:
- The vertical aiming cannot be set correctly if the vehicle is parked on a slope with more than 1 degree of horizontal slope. Use the level gauge to ensure inspection site is within this parameter.
- When the millimeter wave radar is adjusted on ground that has more than 1 degree of horizontal slope (drainage slope), the vertical aiming cannot be adjusted correctly. Check the levelness of the ground, but if there is a continuous slope, then adjust the angle of millimeter wave radar so it is parallel to the ground. Lay a ruler (at least 12") or other flat straight object on the ground and put the level on top to confirm the levelness of the ground.
1. Put the level (A) on the aiming pad (B) of the millimeter wave radar.
2. Turn the vertical adjusting bolt (C) with a screwdriver, and adjust the angle of millimeter wave radar unit so that the air bubble in the level is centered.
Horizontal Aiming
1. Park the vehicle on level ground with at least this much open space around it: 32.8 ft (10 m) in front, 13.1 ft (4 m) in width, and 4.92 ft (1.5 m) in height.
2. Make sure there are no reflecting objects or anything in this range.
3. Check the tire pressures, and adjust the pressures to the specified value if needed.
4. Put a person or an object equivalent to the driver's weight in the driver's seat.
Setting the Distance Between the Target and the Vehicle
NOTE: When marking on the floor, use suitable tape to mark the exact locations.
5. At the back of the vehicle: Place the centering stand under the rear jacking bracket, then mark the spot (A) at the centerline of the centering stand.
6. At the back of the vehicle: Position the gas strut holder between the rear jacking bracket and the mark on the floor.
7. At the front of the vehicle: Place the centering stand under the line (A) on the front jacking bracket.
8. Run the cord through the centerline hole in the centering stand.
9. Hang the plumb bob (A) from the center of the front bumper (B), and mark the spot (C) on the floor where the tip of the plumb bob touches the floor.
10. Adjust the tip (A) of the height rod so that it is aligned with the center of the "A" emblem (B).
11. With the radar aimer set (A) aligned with the cord, move the radar aimer set out in front of the vehicle until the cord is fully extended 16.4 ft (5 m) from the point (B).
Aiming
12. Connect the HDS to the data link connector (DLC) (A).
13. Turn the vehicle to the ON mode.
14. Check for DTCs with the HDS
.NOTE: If DTC P2583-87 or DTC P2583-96 is indicated, troubleshoot the indicated DTC first.
15. Turn the vehicle to the ON mode.
16. Press the MAIN switch (A) ON.
17. Select ADAPTIVE CRUISE CONTROL (ACC) from MAIN menu. Select RADAR AIMING from ADJUSTMENT menu, the MID will indicate the number 4 on its display for 2 seconds, then display NO TARGET.
18. Make sure the MID indicates NO TARGET on its display.
NOTE: When the radar is aimed correctly the MID indicates NO TARGET. If this is not indicated there is an unwanted radar reflection in front of the vehicle in the range of the radar.
19. Confirm the result of the horizontal auto aiming following the onscreen instructions of the HDS.
NOTE: The result of all auto aiming can be confirmed by the HDS, or by watching the MID. When watching the MID, if the auto aiming is confirmed, the MID will display "RADAR OK" with the specification of 100+/-2, and the brake lights will illuminate. When the target is out of auto range, the MID will display "NO TARGET", the brakes will not illuminate, and an audible tone will sound. The auto aiming is not complete. If the aiming failure code 120, 121, 122, 123, or 124 is indicated, the aiming target is not set correctly. Inspect the millimeter wave radar mounting for bent or damaged parts. Verify the vertical aiming. Reset the aiming target.
20. After adjustment, confirm the MID display and that the brake lights illuminate, and finalize the horizontal aiming (end the aiming process on the HDS).
21. After aiming, clear the DTCs with the HDS
.
Aiming Failure Codes (if the aiming is incomplete)
NOTE: If the aiming is incomplete, the MID indicates an aiming failure code. The ACC unit does not store the aiming failure code, and you can not read the aiming failure codes with the HDS, so note the aiming failure code before turn the vehicle to the OFF (LOCK) mode. Aiming failure code (on the MID) Cause How to solve 120 Two or more aiming targets exist. Remove all reflective objects except the correct special tools, and repeat the aiming procedure. 121 The width of the aiming target is out of specification. Use the genuine aiming target, and repeat the aiming procedure. 122 The distance of the aiming target is out of specification. Set the distance to the aiming target 16.1-16.7 ft (4.9-5.1 m), and repeat the aiming procedure. 123 The aiming target is moved. Do the aiming procedure again. 124 The right and left position of the aiming target is out of specification. Reset the aiming target at the correct position, and repeat the aiming procedure. - Front Grille Cover - Install
