SRS components are located in this area. Review the SRS component locations (see COMPONENT LOCATION INDEX ) and the precautions and procedures (see PRECAUTIONS AND PROCEDURES ) before doing repairs or service.
- Put on gloves to protect your hands.
- Take care not to damage, wrinkle, or twist the carpet.
- Be careful not to damage the dashboard or the other interior trim pieces.
- Use the appropriate tool from the KTC trim tool set to avoid damage when removing components.
- When prying with a flat-tip screwdriver, wrap it with protective tape to prevent damage.
- Remove these items:
- Front seats, both sides (see FRONT SEAT REMOVAL/INSTALLATION )
- Kick panels, both sides (see FRONT DOOR SILL AREA )
- Driver's dashboard undercover (see DRIVER'S DASHBOARD UNDERCOVER REMOVAL/INSTALLATION )
- Passenger's dashboard undercover (see GLOVE BOX DAMPER REPLACEMENT )
- Center console (see CENTER CONSOLE REMOVAL/INSTALLATION )
- Steering joint cover (see STEERING COLUMN REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION )
- Shift cable (see SHIFT CABLE REPLACEMENT )
- Shift lever bracket base (see SHIFT LEVER REMOVAL )
- Release the hooks (A), then remove the accelerator pedal clip (B).
- While pushing down the return spring (A) with a flat-tip screwdriver, pull back the accelerator pedal (B) to release the hook (C).
- Remove the footrest (A) by pulling it to detach the clips.
- Remove the bolts, then remove the yaw rate-lateral/(longitudinal) acceleration sensor mounting bracket (A). Detach the harness clips (C), and remove the TORX ground bolt (D) with a TORX T30 bit. Disconnect the SRS unit connector B.
- Detach the clips (A, B) fastening the carpet to both door sill areas.
- Pull out the front carpet (C) from under the dashboard, then remove the carpet.
- If necessary, release the hook (A) that is just under the arrow mark (B) on the floor mat holder (C) by prying up on the holder with a flat-tip screwdriver, and remove the holder through the slit (D) in the carpet (E).
- Install the front carpet in the reverse order of removal, and note these items:
- If the clips are damaged or stress-whitened, replace them with new ones.
- If you remove the accelerator pedal clip, replace it with a new one.
- If necessary, adjust the parking brake cable (see PEDAL FREE PLAY ).
- Push the clips into place securely.

When to See a Mechanic
Stop DIY work and contact a certified mechanic immediately if any of the following apply:
- • You smell fuel, burning insulation, or see smoke.
- • Brakes feel soft, pull hard to one side, or make grinding noises.
- • The engine overheats, stalls repeatedly, or misfires under load.
- • You are missing required tools, torque specs, or safe lifting equipment.
- • You are not confident in the next step or safety outcome.
