- Remove connecting rod cap and bearing half. Clean crankshaft rod journal and bearing half. Place one strip of Plastigage across rod journal. Install bearing half and cap and tighten bolts to 14 ft. lbs. (19 N.m). Place paint mark on connecting rod and bolt head and turn bolt an additional 90 degrees. DO NOT rotate crankshaft.
- Remove rod cap and bearing half and measure widest parts of Plastigage. See CRANKSHAFT, MAIN & CONNECTING ROD BEARINGSΒ table under ENGINE SPECIFICATIONS.
- If Plastigage is too wide or too narrow, remove upper half of bearing. Install a new bearing pair with same color code. Recheck clearance. DO NOT file, shim or scrape bearings or caps to adjust clearance.
- If Plastigage shows clearance is still incorrect, insert next larger or smaller bearing. Recheck clearance. If proper clearance cannot be obtained with this adjustment, replace crankshaft and repeat clearance check.
