The fuel pressure sensor for the high pressure section of the fuel system has the task of supplying the Engine Control Module (ECM) with the actual fuel pressure (absolute pressure) in the fuel rail. The signal is used to control the fuel metering valve on the fuel pump on the high pressure side, and to calculate injection time. This is to achieve the desired fuel pressure and obtain the correct amount of fuel for combustion.

The sensor, which is an advanced form piezo resistor, is grounded in the control module and supplied with 5 V from the control module.

The resistance of the sensor varies depending on the pressure. The voltage level of the analogue signal to the control module therefore also varies.

The fuel pressure sensor can be diagnosed by the Engine Control Module (ECM) and the sensor signal can be read off.

When to See a Mechanic

Stop DIY work and contact a certified mechanic immediately if any of the following apply:

  • β€’ You smell fuel, burning insulation, or see smoke.
  • β€’ Brakes feel soft, pull hard to one side, or make grinding noises.
  • β€’ The engine overheats, stalls repeatedly, or misfires under load.
  • β€’ You are missing required tools, torque specs, or safe lifting equipment.
  • β€’ You are not confident in the next step or safety outcome.
