The control module can register diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) ABS-0011 and ABS-0021 in three different ways:

  1. The control module activates the inlet and outlet valves to increase wheel speed when it registers (via the wheel sensor) that a wheel stops or rotates too slowly in relation to car reference speed when the car is being driven or the ABS system is operating and vehicle speed is above 20 km/h (12.4 mph). Diagnostic trouble code (DTC) ABS-0011 or ABS-0021 is stored (depending on the wheel sensor) if wheel speed does not increase within 28 seconds and there is no open-circuit in the wheel sensor.
  2. The control module has a counter (extrapolation counter) which counts the number of times changes in wheel speed are greater than permitted (calculated). Diagnostic trouble code (DTC) ABS-0011 or ABS-0021 is stored (depending on the wheel sensor) if wheel acceleration exceeds 100 g and wheel speed exceeds 20 km/h (12.4 mph) (and not the same as vehicle speed) for more than 154 ms.
  3. Diagnostic trouble code (DTC) ABS-0011 or ABS-0021 is stored (depending on the wheel sensor) if the control module registers that the signal from the wheel sensor is missing when starting from a speed below 6 km/h (3.7 mph) or if the slowest wheel rotates at a speed less than 40-60 % (depending on vehicle speed) of the fastest wheel and no open-circuit is detected in the wheel sensor circuit.

Substitute Value

  • ABS system is blocked.
  • Anti-spin function is blocked.

Possible Source

  • One of the wheels has been blocked while the car has being driven.
  • Loose wheel sensor.
  • Gap between wheel sensor and pulse wheel to large or too small.
  • Hub vibrations or play in wheel bearings.
  • Faulty outlet valve in ABS hydraulic modulator.
  • Defective pulse wheel.
  • Defective wheel sensor.

Fault symptom[s]

  • ABS warning lamp lit.
  • Anti-spin warning lamp lit.
  • No ABS function.
  • Anti-spin does not function.

When to See a Mechanic

Stop DIY work and contact a certified mechanic immediately if any of the following apply:

  • You smell fuel, burning insulation, or see smoke.
  • Brakes feel soft, pull hard to one side, or make grinding noises.
  • The engine overheats, stalls repeatedly, or misfires under load.
  • You are missing required tools, torque specs, or safe lifting equipment.
  • You are not confident in the next step or safety outcome.
