EAT. Code 2-2-1
2-2-1 Short-circuit to ground in solenoid S2 circuit
DTC information
Conditions for DTC
Solenoid S2 works with solenoid S1 to actuate transmission gear-shifting. Solenoid S2 operates when battery voltage is applied from the transmission control module (TCM) and is activated in 1st and 2nd gears. If the TCM registers a short circuit to ground on solenoid S2 circuit when the solenoid should not be activated, DTC 2-2-1 is set. Solenoid S2 cannot then be activated.
Substitution value
The TCM "Limp-home" program has been initiated and the transmission operates only in 4th gear.
Defect cause
- Short circuit to ground in the signal wiring.
- Malfunction in solenoid.
Fault symptom
- Poor performance due to the transmission starting in 4th gear.
- Fault-tracing starts with EAT1.
EAT1
Checking solenoid S2
- Ignition ON.
- Set gearshift selector to position P.
Check solenoid S2 using Diagnostic Test Mode 4. Diagnostic Test Mode 4 Use a stethoscope to hear if the solenoid is operating.
If solenoid is operating:
- Intermittent fault. Fault-tracing as per EAT4.
If the solenoid is not operating:
- Check signal wiring resistance to ground in the transmission EAT2.
EAT2
Checking signal wiring resistance to ground in the transmission.
- Ignition OFF
- Remove the air cleaner (ACL) housing to access the transmission connector
- Disconnect the transmission connector
Connect an ohmmeter between the transmission connector terminal 22 (transmission side) and ground.
The ohmmeter should read 10-15 Ohms.
If reading is OK:
- Check the cable between the transmission connector terminal 22 and the TCM #A28 for short circuit to ground as per FA3. FA. Checking Wiring and Connections
If reading is incorrect
- Checking solenoid S2 EAT3.
EAT3
Checking solenoid S2
- Ignition OFF
- Open the control system, as per R1-R13.
- Disconnect solenoid S2.
Use an ohmmeter to measure between the pin on solenoid S2 and the transmission housing.
The ohmmeter should read 10-15 Ohms.
If reading is OK:
- Check the cable between the solenoid S2 and transmission connector terminal 22 for short circuit to ground as per FA3. FA. Checking Wiring and Connections
If replacing cable harness, refer to R49-R57
If reading is incorrect:
- Try a new solenoid S2 as per R20.
EAT4
Intermittent Fault
Checking wiring and connections
- Check the wiring between solenoid S2 in the transmission and TCM #A28 for intermittent short circuit to ground as per FA3. FA. Checking Wiring and Connections

When to See a Mechanic
Stop DIY work and contact a certified mechanic immediately if any of the following apply:
- • You smell fuel, burning insulation, or see smoke.
- • Brakes feel soft, pull hard to one side, or make grinding noises.
- • The engine overheats, stalls repeatedly, or misfires under load.
- • You are missing required tools, torque specs, or safe lifting equipment.
- • You are not confident in the next step or safety outcome.
