1992 Volvo 240 Base, 4D Sedan, Automatic, AW70LSECTION Installation
  1. If steering lock assembly was removed, install assembly so distance from end of steering column tube to rear edge of lock assembly is 6.0" (152 mm).
  2. Install both plastic guides in steering column support. Turn guides so washers face down. Position steering column and screw in (but do not tighten) shearing bolts in column support. Install lower rubber spacer and retaining bracket. Tighten bolts by hand.
  3. Working from inside engine compartment, install steering column bulkhead seal with cone turned inward. Tighten 4 shear bolts, but do not shear off bolts at this time. Tighten lower retaining bracket bolts to 14 ft. lbs. (20 N.m).
  4. Reattach defroster hose. Reconnect ignition lock connector. Raise lower steering shaft and attach universal joint to upper steering shaft. Tighten upper bolt and install locking pin. Tighten lower universal joint and install locking pin.
  5. Measure distance from steering shaft joint and shoulder on lower steering shaft. Position steering column assembly so distance is .59" (15 mm). See Fig 1 .

  7. Install combination switch and upper and lower steering column covers. Ensure front wheels are straight and install contact reel. See AIR BAG CONTACT REELΒ  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Adjust contact reel. See CONTACT REEL CENTERINGΒ  under ADJUSTMENTS. Install steering wheel and air bag module. See STEERING WHEEL & AIR BAG MODULEΒ  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.
