Steering Gear: Removal
1987 Volvo 240 DL, 4D Sedan, StandardSECTION Removal
- On 700 series vehicles, disconnect lower steering gear shaft by removing snap ring and lower clamp bolt. Loosen upper clamp bolt. Slide joint up on shaft. On all others, remove clamp screw and bend flange apart slightly to disconnect shaft from gear.
- On all models, raise and support vehicle. Remove wheel assemblies. Remove tie rod end castle nuts. Separate tie rod ends from knuckles. Remove splash guard.
- Disconnect hoses at steering gear. Plug hose connections to prevent contamination. On 700 series vehicles, remove sway bar mounting brackets from side members. Move brackets aside. Remove steering gear attaching bolts. Lower steering gear.
- On all others, remove steering gear bolts. Pull gear down until free of steering shaft flange. Remove steering gear from left side of vehicle.
