Tie Rod, Inner: Installing

2010 Volkswagen Routan SSECTION Installing

-- Apply Volkswagen genuine parts lock and seal adhesive or equivalent medium thread locker adhesive to inboard end threads of inner tie rod.

-- Install inner tie rod (1) onto gear (2) using appropriate inner tie rod installer tool or crows foot wrench on hex. Tighten inner tie rod.

-- Loosely place new clamp over large end of boot.

-- Slide new boot with clamp over end of inner tie rod and onto gear body.

-- Push small end of boot (2) past groove (1) machined into inner tie rod.

-- Apply a small amount of Volkswagen genuine parts lubriplate or equivalent uniformly to groove (1) in inner tie rod shaft. This allows for toe adjustment without twisting boots.

-- Pull small end of boot outward until ridge inside boot engages groove.

-- Install new clamp (3) over small end of boot (1).

-- Using crimping pliers (1), crimp clamp securing boot to gear body.

-- If servicing right inner tie rod, position heat shield (1) over steering gear (2). Install mounting screws and push-pins. Tighten screws to 8 Nm (71 in lbs).

-- Thread tie rod jam nut (3) onto inner tie rod (4) far enough to install outer tie rod.

-- Install outer tie rod (5). Refer to TIE ROD, OUTERΒ .
