2001 Volkswagen Cabrio GLX (1V7) L4-2.0L (ABA)SECTION Adapting ECM To Throttle Valve Control Module
Engine Control Module (ECM), Adapting To Throttle Valve Control Module
Adaptation teaches the engine control module (with ignition switched on and engine not running) the throttle valve control module stop positions and a comparison graph between throttle valve potentiometer and throttle valve positioner sensor.
Adaptation sequence must be performed if:
- The throttle valve control module is removed and installed
- The throttle valve control module is replaced
- If when installing another engine another throttle valve control module is installed
Special tools and equipment
- VAG 1551 Scan Tool or VAG 1552 with cable
- VAG 1551/3
Test conditions
- No DTCs must be stored in DTC memory, checking DTC memory
- The battery voltage must be at least 11.5 V.
- All electrical consumers, e.g. lights and rear window heating must be switched off
- The throttle valve must be at idle speed position.
- The cruise control system must be functioning correctly if installed.
Work sequence
- Connect VAG 1551 Scan Tool ((VAG 1552). Then switch ignition on and select engine control module with "Address word" 01. (Connecting scan tool and selecting engine control module [1][2][3]Connecting VAG Scan Tool 1551/1552).

System in Basic Setting 98 ->
xx angle degree xx.x % Idling ADP. runs
After pressing the Q key the throttle valve positioner is driven to Min., Max. and some intermediate positions and the relevant throttle valve angles are stored in non-volatile memory. This procedure takes max. 10 seconds. The throttle valve then remains in the start position for a brief period then closes.

System in Basic Setting 98 ->
xx angle degree xx.x % Idling ADP. OK
Matching has been performed successfully.
To store the values:
- Switch ignition off for at least 25 seconds (control module after-run).
NOTE:
If the basic setting of the control module is interrupted, the cause could be one of the following:
- Throttle valve cannot reach the mechanical stop because of contamination e.g. oil deposits or an incorrectly adjusted throttle cable.
Battery voltage too low.
- Throttle valve control module or wiring is faulty.
After an interruption a malfunction is stored in DTC memory. When next switching on the ignition the basic setting is automatically performed again.
- End engine basic setting by pressing -> key.
- Press keys 0 and 6 for function "End Output" and confirm entry with Q key.
