Thorough Check

1984 Volkswagen Jetta GL, 1.6 HSECTION Thorough Check
NOTE: Perform Hall generator THOROUGH CHECK only after verifying that the control unit and ignition coil are okay and that wiring connectors are clean and tight.
  1. Unplug both connectors from idle stabilizer and connect them together. Remove high tension cable from distributor cap and ground it. Be sure control unit harness connector is attached to control unit. See Fig 1.

  2. Pull back rubber boot on connector. Attach voltmeter positive lead to connector terminal No. 6 and negative lead to terminal No. 3.
  3. Turn ignition on with engine off. Turn engine over slowly by hand while checking voltage reading.
  4. While turning engine over, shutter of trigger wheel will pass air gap of Hall generator Voltage readings should be as follows:
    • 0-.7 Volts with shutter outside of air gap.
    • 1.8-battery voltage with shutter inside air gap.
  5. If not to specifications, replace Hall generator.
