Backlash & Side Bearing Preload
1980 Triumph SpitfireSECTION Backlash & Side Bearing Preload
- After checking for burrs, mount ring gear to carrier, using Loctite on the bolts. Install bearing caps and measure ring gear runout.
- Before installing pinion shaft, measure "Total End Play" of carrier assembly as follows: Mount a dial indicator so foot will touch rear side of ring gear. With bearing caps removed, push carrier fully to one side of case and zero dial indicator. Move carrier fully in the opposite direction and note total end play measurement for further use.
- With pinion shaft installed, fully move ring gear into mesh with pinion gear and zero dial indicator. Move carrier assembly fully in opposite direction until ring gear side bearing is butted in housing. Note "In-Out" mesh clearance for ring gear backlash calculations.
- To determine ring gear backlash, subtract backlash specification from "In-Out" reading obtained in step 3)Β
to determine correct ring gear side shim pack thickness. Subtract ring gear side shim pack thickness from the total end play figure obtained in step 2)Β
to determine caged side shim pack thickness.NOTE: For preload, add 0.002" (0.05 mm) to each shim pack.
