3UR-FE ENGINE CONTROL: SFI SYSTEM: P0010, P0020: Camshaft Position "A" Actuator Circuit (Bank 1)
P0020 - Camshaft Position "A" Actuator Circuit (Bank 2)
DESCRIPTION
- This DTC is designed to detect opens or shorts in the camshaft oil control valve (OCV) circuit. If the OCV duty-cycle is excessively high or low while the engine is running, the ECM will illuminate the MIL and store the DTC.
- The VVT (variable valve timing) system adjusts the intake valve timing to improve the driveability. The engine oil pressure turns the camshaft actuator to adjust the valve timing. The OCV is a solenoid valve and switches the engine oil line. The valve moves when the ECM applies 12 V to the solenoid. The ECM changes the energizing time to the solenoid (duty-cycle) in accordance with the camshaft position, crankshaft position, throttle position, etc.
HINT
This DTC relates to the Camshaft Oil Control Valve (OCV).
MONITOR DESCRIPTION
This DTC is designed to detect opens or shorts in the camshaft oil control valve (OCV) circuit. If the OCV duty-cycle is excessively high or low while the engine is running, the ECM will illuminate the MIL and store the DTC.
MONITOR STRATEGY
TYPICAL ENABLING CONDITIONS
TYPICAL MALFUNCTION THRESHOLDS
COMPONENT OPERATING RANGE
CONFIRMATION DRIVING PATTERN
1. Connect the Techstream to the DLC3.
2. Turn the engine switch on (IG) and turn the Techstream on.
3. Clear the DTCs (even if no DTCs are stored, perform the clear DTC operation).
4. Turn the engine switch off and wait for at least 30 seconds.
5. Turn the engine switch on (IG) and turn the Techstream on.
6. Wait 5 seconds [A].
7. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Trouble Codes [B].
8. Read the DTCs.
HINT
- If a DTC is output, the system is malfunctioning.
- If a DTC is not output, perform the following procedure.
9. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Utility / All Readiness.
10. Input the DTC: P0010 or P0020.
11. Check the DTC judgment result.
HINT
If the judgment result shows ABNORMAL, the system has a malfunction.
12. If the test result is INCOMPLETE or UNKNOWN and no pending DTC is output, perform a universal trip and check for permanent DTCs Reading and Clearing Diagnostic Trouble Codes.
HINT
- If a permanent DTC is output, the system is malfunctioning.
- If no permanent DTC is output, the system is normal.

INSPECTION PROCEDURE
HINT
- Read freeze frame data using the Techstream. Freeze frame data records the engine condition when malfunctions are detected. When troubleshooting, freeze frame data can help determine if the vehicle was moving or stationary, if the engine was warmed up or not, if the air-fuel ratio was lean or rich, and other data from the time the malfunction occurred.
- Bank 1 refers to the bank that includes the No. 1 cylinder*.
*: The No. 1 cylinder is the cylinder which is farthest from the transmission.
- Bank 2 refers to the bank that does not include the No. 1 cylinder.
PROCEDURE
1. CHECK DTC
(a) Clear DTC after recording the freeze frame data and DTC Reading and Clearing Diagnostic Trouble Codes.
(b) Turn the engine switch off.
(c) Allow the engine to idle and check DTC.
(d) Check that P0010 or P0020 is not output.
OK:
P0010 or P0020 is not output.
NG -- INSPECT CAMSHAFT OIL CONTROL VALVE ASSEMBLY
OK -- CHECK FOR INTERMITTENT PROBLEMS Check for Intermittent Problems
2. INSPECT CAMSHAFT OIL CONTROL VALVE ASSEMBLY
(a) Disconnect the C24 or C25 camshaft oil control valve (OCV) connector.
(b) Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below.
Standard Resistance:
NG -- REPLACE CAMSHAFT OIL CONTROL VALVE ASSEMBLY Removal
OK -- Continue to next step.
3. CHECK HARNESS AND CONNECTOR (OCV - ECM)
(a) Disconnect the C24 or C25 OCV connector.
(b) Disconnect the C53 ECM connector.
(c) Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below.
Standard Resistance:
NG -- REPAIR OR REPLACE HARNESS OR CONNECTOR
OK -- REPLACE ECM Removal

When to See a Mechanic
Stop DIY work and contact a certified mechanic immediately if any of the following apply:
- β’ You smell fuel, burning insulation, or see smoke.
- β’ Brakes feel soft, pull hard to one side, or make grinding noises.
- β’ The engine overheats, stalls repeatedly, or misfires under load.
- β’ You are missing required tools, torque specs, or safe lifting equipment.
- β’ You are not confident in the next step or safety outcome.
