Fuel Injector: Inspection

2009 Toyota FJ Cruiser RWDSECTION Inspection
  1. INSPECT FUEL INJECTOR ASSEMBLY
    1. Check the resistance.
      1. Using an ohmmeter, measure the resistance between the terminals.

        Standard resistance

If the result is not as specified, replace the fuel injector.

    2. Check the injection volume.
      NOTE:
      • Perform the test in a well-ventilated area away from naked for flames.
      • Handle the fuel tube connector carefully.

      3. Remove the fuel pressure regulator (See REMOVAL  ).
      4. Install the O-ring onto the fuel inlet of the pressure regulator.
      5. Connect SST (hose) to the fuel inlet of the pressure regulator with another SST (union) and the 2 bolts.

      6. Connect the fuel return hose to the fuel outlet of the pressure regulator.
      7. Install a new O-ring onto the injector.
      8. Connect SST (adaptor and hose) to the injector and hold the injector and union with SST (clamp).

      9. Set the injector in a graduated cylinder.
CAUTION: Install a suitable vinyl tube onto the injector to prevent gasoline splashes.
      10. Connect the Techstream to the DLC3.
      11. Turn the ignition switch ON.
      12. Turn the Techstream ON.
      13. Select the following menu items: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Active Test / Control the Fuel Pump / ON.
      14. Install SST onto the fuel injector.
      15. Connect SST to the battery, then measure the injection volume for 15 seconds. Perform the inspection 2 or 3 times, then calculate the average.

        Standard:

When to See a Mechanic

Stop DIY work and contact a certified mechanic immediately if any of the following apply:

  • You smell fuel, burning insulation, or see smoke.
  • Brakes feel soft, pull hard to one side, or make grinding noises.
  • The engine overheats, stalls repeatedly, or misfires under load.
  • You are missing required tools, torque specs, or safe lifting equipment.
  • You are not confident in the next step or safety outcome.
