Park/Neutral Position Switch Assembly (ATM): Replacement

2004 Toyota Matrix XR, FWD, StandardSECTION Replacement

  1. REMOVE BATTERY 
  2. REMOVE BATTERY CARRIER 
    1. Remove the 4 bolts and battery carrier.
  3. DISCONNECT FLOOR SHIFT CABLE TRANSMISSION CONTROL SHIFT 
    1. Remove the nut from the control shaft lever.

    2. Disconnect the control cable from the control shaft lever.
    3. Remove the clip and disconnect the control cable from the bracket.

  4. REMOVE PARK/NEUTRAL POSITION SWITCH ASSY 
    1. Disconnect the park/neutral position switch connector.
    2. Remove the nut, washer and control shaft lever.
    3. Pry out the lock plate and remove the manual valve shaft nut.
    4. Remove the 2 bolts and pull out the park/neutral position switch.

  5. INSTALL PARK/NEUTRAL POSITION SWITCH ASSY 
    1. A246E: 
      1. Install the park/neutral position switch to the manual valve shaft.

      2. Temporarily install the 2 bolts.
      3. Place a new lock plate and tighten the nut.
        1. Torque: 5.5 N.m (56 kgf.cm, 49 in.lbf) 
      4. Temporarily install the control shaft lever.
      5. Turn the lever counterclockwise until it stops, then turn it clockwise 2 notches.
      6. Remove the control shaft lever.

      7. Align the groove with neutral basic line.

      8. Hold the switch in position and tighten the 2 bolts.
        1. Torque: 5.5 N.m (56 kgf.cm, 49 in.lbf) 
      9. Using a screwdriver, stake the nut with the lock plate.

      10. Install the control shaft lever, washer and nut.

        1. Torque: 12.5 N.m (127 kgf.cm, 9 ft lbf) 
      11. Connect the park/neutral position switch connector.
    2. U341F: 
      1. Install the park/neutral position switch to the manual valve shaft.

      2. Temporarily install the 2 bolts.
      3. Place a new lock plate and tighten the nut.
        1. Torque: 6.9 N.m (70 kgf.cm, 61 in.lbf) 
      4. Temporarily install the control shaft lever.
      5. Turn the lever counterclockwise until it stops, then turn it clockwise 2 notches.
      6. Remove the control shaft lever.

      7. Align the groove with neutral basic line.

      8. Hold the switch in position and tighten the 2 bolts.
        1. Torque: 5.4 N.m (55 kgf.cm, 48 in.lbf) 
      9. Using a screwdriver, stake the nut with the lock plate.

      10. Install the control shaft lever, washer and nut.
        1. Torque: 12.7 N.m (130 kgf cm, 9 ft.lbf) 
      11. Connect the park/neutral position switch connector.
  6. INSTALL FLOOR SHIFT CABLE TRANSMISSION CONTROL SHIFT 
    1. Temporarily install the control cable to the control shaft lever with nut.

    2. Install the control cable with the clip to the bracket.

    NOTE: Insert the cable securely.
  7. INSTALL BATTERY CARRIER 
    1. Install the battery carrier and 4 bolts.

      1. Torque: 13 N.m (132 kgf cm, 10 ft.lbf) 
  8. ADJUST SHIFT LEVER POSITION (See  ADJUSTMENT   ) 
  9. INSPECT SHIFT LEVER POSITION (See  ADJUSTMENT   ) 
  10. INSPECT PARK/NEUTRAL POSITION SWITCH ASSY (See ADJUSTMENT   )
