Instrument Panel Assembly: Removal
2004 Toyota Matrix XR, FWD, StandardSECTION Removal

- Disconnect and isolate the battery negative cable.
- Remove center console closeout panel. (Refer to CENTER CONSOLE CLOSEOUT PANEL ).
- Remove front floor console assembly. (Refer to FRONT FLOOR CONSOLE ).
- Remove floor console base assembly two screws attaching L-brackets to instrument panel. (Refer to FLOOR CONSOLE BASE ASSEMBLY ).
- Remove nuts attaching the floor braces to instrument panel (Fig 1 ). (Refer to REMOVALΒ ).
- Remove steering column opening cover. (Refer to REMOVALΒ ).
- Remove inflatable knee blocker four mounting screws (Fig 2 ).
- Remove two screws attaching instrument panel trim outlet plate (Fig 3 ).
- Using a trim stick C-4755 or equivalent, disengage the locking tabs attaching instrument panel trim plate.
- Disengage braking brake handle from brake park release bracket, leave rod engaged.
- Remove instrument panel reinforcement (Fig 4 ).
- Disconnect bulkhead wiring harness connectors.
- Disconnect body control module wiring connectors.
- Remove upper and lower steering column shrouds. (Refer to SHROUD - LOWER ) and (Refer to SHROUD - UPPER ).
- Disconnect steering column wiring connectors.
- Disconnect steering column pinch bolt and retaining nuts (4). (Refer to INTERMEDIATE SHAFT ).
- Disconnect brake light wiring connectors.
- Remove steering column retaining nuts (Fig 5 ).
- Remove shift interlock cable. (Refer to SHIFT INTERLOCK CABLE ).
- Remove both left and right side A-pillar trim. (Refer to A-PILLAR TRIM ).
- Remove instrument panel end caps. (Refer to REMOVALΒ ).
- Remove both front door sill scuff plates. (Refer to FRONT DOOR SILL SCUFF PLATE ).
- Remove both cowl side trim panel. (Refer to COWL SIDE TRIM PANEL ).
