Steering Sensor: Replacement

2004 Toyota Matrix XR, FWD, StandardSECTION Replacement

  1. PRECAUTION (SEE  AIR BAG RESTRAINT SYSTEMS  ) 
  2. DISCONNECT BATTERY NEGATIVE TERMINAL 
  3. PLACE FRONT WHEELS FACING STRAIGHT AHEAD 
  4. REMOVE STEERING WHEEL COVER LOWER NO.2 
  5. REMOVE STEERING WHEEL COVER LOWER NO.3 
  6. REMOVE HORN BUTTON ASSY (SEE  HORN ASSY  ) 
  7. REMOVE STEERING WHEEL ASSY (SEE  OVERHAUL  ) 

    SST 09950-50013 (09951-05010, 09952-05010, 09953-05020, 09954-05021)

  8. REMOVE STEERING COLUMN COVER LWR (SEE  OVERHAUL  ) 
  9. REMOVE STEERING COLUMN COVER (SEE  OVERHAUL  ) 
  10. REMOVE SPIRAL CABLE SUB-ASSY (SEE  AIR BAG RESTRAINT SYSTEMS  ) 
  11. REMOVE STEERING SENSOR 
    1. Disconnect the steering sensor connector.
    2. While pressing the 2 claws, remove the steering sensor.

  12. INSTALL STEERING SENSOR 
    1. Install the steering sensor.
    2. Connect the steering sensor connector.
  13. INSPECT SPIRAL CABLE SUB-ASSY 
    1. If any of the following conditions occur, replace the spiral cable sub-assy with a new one.

      Condition: 

      • Scratches or cracks on the connector 
      • Cracks, dents or chipping of the spiral cable sub-assy 
  14. PLACE FRONT WHEELS FACING STRAIGHT AHEAD (SEE  AIR BAG RESTRAINT SYSTEMS  ) 
  15. INSTALL SPIRAL CABLE SUB-ASSY (SEE  AIR BAG RESTRAINT SYSTEMS  ) 
  16. CENTER SPIRAL CABLE (SEE  AIR BAG RESTRAINT SYSTEMS  ) 
  17. INSTALL STEERING WHEEL ASSY (SEE  OVERHAUL  ) 
  18. INSTALL HORN BUTTON ASSY (SEE  HORN ASSY  ) 
  19. INSPECT HORN BUTTON ASSY (SEE  HORN ASSY  ) 
  20. CONNECT BATTERY NEGATIVE TERMINAL 
  21. INSPECT SRS WARNING LIGHT (SEE  AIR BAG RESTRAINT SYSTEMS  ) 
  22. PERFORM INITIALIZATION (SEE  INITIALIZATION  ) 

    HINT:

    When disconnecting the negative battery terminal, it is necessary to initialize other systems.
