Inspection Procedure
2004 Toyota Matrix XR, FWD, StandardSECTION Inspection Procedure

- INSPECT STOP LAMP SWITCH OPERATION (for Stop lamp)
- Check that the stop lamp comes on while depressing the brake pedal, and goes off when releasing the brake pedal.
OK:
BRAKE PEDAL CONDITIONBrake pedal condition Stop lamp condition Depressed ON Released OFF - NG : INSPECT STOP LAMP SWITCH CIRCUIT (SEE PROBLEM SYMPTOMS TABLE )
- OK : Go to next step
- Check that the stop lamp comes on while depressing the brake pedal, and goes off when releasing the brake pedal.
- INSPECT STOP LAMP SWITCH OPERATION (for Back-up Signal)
- Turn the ignition switch off.
- Disconnect the stop lamp switch assy connector.
- Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below.
Standard:
SWITCH CONDITIONTester connection Switch condition Specification S12-3 - S12-4 Switch pin free (Brake pedal depressed) 10 kΩ or higher S12-3 - S12-4 Switch pin pushed in (Brake pedal released) Below 1 Ω
- NG : REPLACE STOP LAMP SWITCH ASSY
- OK : Go to next step.
- INSPECT ECM
- Reconnect the stop lamp switch assy connector.
- Disconnect the E5 connector of the ECM.
- Turn the ignition switch to the ON position.
- Measure the voltage according to the value(s) in the table below.
Standard:
BRAKE PEDAL CONDITIONTester connection Brake pedal condition Specification STP (E5-19) -Body ground Depressed 10 to 14 V STP (E5-19) -Body ground Released Below 1 V - Measure the voltage according to the value(s) in the table below
Standard:

- OK : REPLACE ECM (SEE REPLACEMENT (2AZ-FE) or REPLACEMENT (3MZ-FE) )
