2004 Toyota Matrix XR, FWD, StandardSECTION Inspection Procedure

  1. INSPECT STOP LAMP SWITCH OPERATION (for Stop lamp) 
    1. Check that the stop lamp comes on while depressing the brake pedal, and goes off when releasing the brake pedal.

      OK: 

      BRAKE PEDAL CONDITION

      Brake pedal condition Stop lamp condition
      Depressed ON
      Released OFF
      1. NG : INSPECT STOP LAMP SWITCH CIRCUIT (SEE  PROBLEM SYMPTOMS TABLE  ) 
      2. OK : Go to next step 
  2. INSPECT STOP LAMP SWITCH OPERATION (for Back-up Signal) 
    1. Turn the ignition switch off.
    2. Disconnect the stop lamp switch assy connector.
    3. Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below.

      Standard: 

      SWITCH CONDITION

      Tester connection Switch condition Specification
      S12-3 - S12-4 Switch pin free (Brake pedal depressed) 10 kΩ or higher
      S12-3 - S12-4 Switch pin pushed in (Brake pedal released) Below 1 Ω

    1. NG : REPLACE STOP LAMP SWITCH ASSY 
    2. OK : Go to next step. 
  3. INSPECT ECM 
    1. Reconnect the stop lamp switch assy connector.
    2. Disconnect the E5 connector of the ECM.
    3. Turn the ignition switch to the ON position.
    4. Measure the voltage according to the value(s) in the table below.

      Standard: 

      BRAKE PEDAL CONDITION

      Tester connection Brake pedal condition Specification
      STP (E5-19) -Body ground Depressed 10 to 14 V
      STP (E5-19) -Body ground Released Below 1 V

    5. Measure the voltage according to the value(s) in the table below

      Standard: 

      BRAKE PEDAL CONDITION

      Tester connection Brake pedal condition Specification
      ST1 - (E5-12) - Body ground Depressed Below 1 Ω
      ST1 - (E5-12) - Body ground Released 10 to 14 V

      1. NG : REPAIR OR REPLACE HARNESS OR CONNECTOR (STOP LAMP SWITCH ASSY - ECM) 
      2. OK : REPLACE ECM (SEE  REPLACEMENT  (2AZ-FE) or  REPLACEMENT  (3MZ-FE) )
