Inspection Procedure

2004 Toyota Matrix XR, FWD, StandardSECTION Inspection Procedure

  1. CHECK STOP LAMP SWITCH OPERATION 
    1. Check that the stop light comes on when the brake pedal is depressed and turns off when the brake pedal is released.

    OK: Go To Next Step 

    TABLE PEDAL ILLUMINATION CONDITION

    Pedal Condition Illumination Condition
    Brake pedal depressed ON
    Brake pedal released OFF

    NG: Go to step   4 

    HINT:

    Check the stop lamp bulb as it may have burnt out.

    OK: Go To Next Step 

  2. INSPECT SKID CONTROL ECU TERMINAL VOLTAGE 
    1. Measure the voltage according to the value(s) in the table below.

    HINT:

    Measure the voltage from behind the connector with the connector connected to the skid control ECU.

    Standard: 

    TABLE TESTER CONNECTION SPECIFIED CONDITION

    Tester Connection Switch Condition Specified Condition
    S8-14 (STP) - Body ground Brake pedal depressed 8 to 14 V
    S8-14 (STP) - Body ground Brake pedal released Below 1 V

    NG: Go to step   4

    OK: Go To Next Step 

  3. RECONFIRM DTC 
    1. Clear the DTCs (see DTC CHECK CLEAR  ).
    2. Turn the power switch ON (READY).
    3. Check the same DTCs are recorded (see DTC CHECK CLEAR  ).

    Result:

    DTC is not output A
    DTC is output B

    B: PROCEED TO NEXT CIRCUIT INSPECTION SHOWN IN PROBLEM SYMPTOMS TABLE (SEE  PROBLEM SYMPTOMS TABLE   ) 

    REPLACE SKID CONTROL ECU ASSY (SEE  SKID CONTROL ECU ASSY  ) 

    NOTE: When replacing the skid control ECU assy, perform initialization of linear solenoid valve and calibration (see INITIALIZATION  ).
  4. INSPECT STOP LAMP SWITCH ASSY 
    1. Disconnect the stop lamp switch assy connector.
    2. Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below.

      Standard: 

      TABLE TESTER CONNECTION SPECIFIED CONDITION

      Switch Condition Tester Connection Specified Condition
      Switch pin free 1 - 2 Below1 Ω
      Switch pin pushed in 1 - 2 10 kΩ or higher

    NG: REPLACE STOP LAMP SWITCH ASSY

    OK: Go To Next Step 

  5. CHECK HARNESS AND CONNECTOR (STOP LAMP SWITCH - SKID CONTROL ECU) 
    1. Disconnect the stop lamp switch connector and skid control ECU connector.
    2. Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below.

    Standard: 

    TABLE TESTER CONNECTION SPECIFIED CONDITION

    Tester Connection Specified Condition
    S8-14 (STP) - S16-1 Below 1 Ω.

    NG: REPAIR OR REPLACE HARNESS OR CONNECTOR

    OK: REPLACE SKID CONTROL ECU ASSY (SEE  SKID CONTROL ECU ASSY  ) 

    NOTE: When replacing the skid control ECU assy, perform initialization of linear solenoid valve and calibration (see INITIALIZATION  ).
